This is the story of Govind Narang, a honest, upright, chivalrous, and handsome and good-looking to boot. He lived in a small village in Punjab, fell in love with Sudha, but marries Masterji's daughter, Pushpa, as she is pregnant by a police officer, who refuses to marry her. Pushpa does not love Govind, and hates Sudha. Together with her brother, Laxman, Pushpa tries to have Sudha thrown out of the village, but is unsuccessful. When Laxman finds out about Pushpa's infidelity, he poisons her, and after his wife's death, Govind relocates to Bombay, with his sister, Ratna. He meets beautiful and gorgeous Gitika, and they fall in love. One day Govind defends the honor of a young girl from the younger brother of hoodlum Johnny Handsome, and as a result generates hatred and animosity. Johnny also is humiliated by Govind and others, and swears vengeance with the help of Sadanana Kutty and Karim Khan Toofani. On the other hand, Govind befriends Ram Shevak, and with his help and assistance of a landowner arranges the purchase of a prestigious plot of land so that hawkers and small shop-owners could set-up their businesses. But nothing goes according to plan. The plot of land and the owner turn out to be fakes, and Govind gets all the blame; His sister is openly raped, and and brutally killed in broad daylight; and Govind himself gets seriously wounded in broad daylight before the very eyes of the people he defended. Does Govind ever recover? Will he be able to redeem himself in the eyes of his friends?
Honest, upright, young and handsome Govind Narang falls in love with a young woman named Sudha. But due to circumstances in the occurrence of an unknown pregnancy by a police man, Govind is forced to marry Pushpa, Masterji's daughter, since the police man refuse to marry her. All is well for Govind after the marriage but not with Pushpa and her hot-headed brother Laxman as they learn about Govind's old relationship with Sudha, they trys to throw her out of the village but to no avil as she is now a police officer. When Laxman finds out about Pushpa's infidelity, he poisons her, and she soon passed away. Seeing his wife dead and to wash away his past Govind and his sister, Rattna now relocates to Bombay in an area called Azad Nagar. He soon reaches up with super-star Gitika, and both fell in love. Azad Nagar residents has always been fared by Johnny and his brother Danny Handsome. One day Govind attempts to defend the right of a young woman and he seriously beats up Danny. When Johnny attempts revenge from Govind, he is humiliated, shaved and striped naked on the outskirts of Bombay by Govind and other residents. Johnny soon recruits two foreigners: Sadanana Kutty and Karim Khan Toofani in order to average his humiliation. Govind also attempts to help hawkers and Sole Traders and so befriends a savior, Ram Shevak and decides to build a market for them in order for them to put up there businesses. Soon it was found out that the plot of land and the owner were fakes and Govind gets all the blame and is called a fraud. He goes with the help of Ram Shevak to find out why he is called names and witnessed his sister being raped openly and he himself is beaten up and badly injured infront of the same residents whom he pitied and try to save. The questions remain: Will Govind ever recover to take revenge on his perpetrators? Will he be granted justice by anyone in Azad Nagar?
There is not a lot new in the plot of "Aaghaaz". It's a pretty standard fusion of revenge drama + love story. What makes it worth watching is Suniel Shetty flexing his acting muscles - finally. Well, that and the chili powder scene referred to in the title of this review.
Suniel has done a lot of these "protector of the people" roles but few allow him to act because few provide him a character with any depth. The character of Govind comes across as somewhat naive and simplistic in his uncompromising morality in the first half of the film. It is only after the intermission that Govind shows some layers. Suniel gives a solid performance in the 2nd half as a man betrayed by the unwillingness of neighbors he once aided to help him when he's in trouble. The scene when neighbors come to confront his legal tactics at his home is a demonstration of acting ability. Govind says nothing but the viewer can see what he's thinking, feel what he's feeling and understand his unspoken rage. It is a case of the writing, direction and performance being in sync. The very fact that he says nothing but commands the scene is marvelous.
There is a somewhat anemic love story attempted. It is not compelling, partially because there's no preamble. The first time we meet the characters, they're already in love. The reunion at the end is not really satisfying.
The songs are good but unremarkable. Production quality is reasonably good - lighting, framing and costumes\set decoration all meet expectations.
The scene with the chili powder is a fave of mine - Govind is wounded and takes refuge in a shop were red chilies are ground into powder. He takes a handful of the powder and smears it into his fresh lacerations and emits a scream of defiance and "*$@#!% that hurt"! His enemies realize how tough he must be and take off running only to be chased by chili-powdered, butt-kicking Govind. Classic!
The only downside to this film is the somewhat graphic depiction of rape in full view of the public. It's a bit unsettling.
But otherwise, watch it if you're a fan of Suniel or a lover of the wounded hero subgenre of Indian films. It's a satisfying ride.
Newly arrived Govind Narang gets into the bad books of Mumbai underworld when he rescues a girl from being molested by them. Soon the goons are after him, and with this return people or Narang's past, the whole of which form Aaghaaz.
It is a film depicting the mafia nuisance in society. The film is a mix of comedy,romance to please everyone in the crowd, because of which the film deviates it from its social direction.
The ladies acting is weak. The camera work is poor, being fast and shaky. The editing is weak with rapid transition from scene to song.
It may have a been a high budget movie of those days, as evidenced by the huge star cast, especially serial actors, and shooting in exotic locales like Malaysia and Switzerland.
Sunil Shetty does well but I don't like his unnecessary screaming like an animal. Else he's one of the best.
