In 2020, Elias van Dorne (John Cusack), CEO of VA Industries, the world's largest robotics company, introduces his most powerful invention--Kronos, a super computer designed to end all wars. When Kronos goes online, it quickly determines that mankind, itself, is the biggest threat to world peace and launches a worldwide robot attack to rid the world of the "infection" of man. Ninety-seven years later, a small band of humans remain alive but on the run from the robot army. A teenage boy, Andrew (Julian Schaffner) and a teenage girl, Calia (Jeannine Wacker), form an unlikely alliance to reach a new world, where it is rumored mankind exists without fear of robot persecution. But does this world actually exist? And will they live long enough to find out?
2020. It's been three years since VA Industries, led by genius Elias Van Dorne, revolutionized the way humans live with VA supplied robots now in three-quarters of all the world's households. In a misstep, VA got into the business of military robots in the wanted goal of world peace, with the exact opposite occurring in the robots having led to greater and more violent war. Now, Van Dorne has come up with an artificial intelligence called Kronos which he believes is the ultimate in robotics. In the mysterious worldwide broadcast launching Kronos which Van Dorne has not yet divulged what it is to do or accomplish, Van Dorne unleashes Kronos on the world, it which is to destroy the human race, which Kronos has determined is the cause of the world's problems. Van Dorne has uploaded a virtual version of himself and his colleague Damien Walsh into Kronos to oversee its progress on the mission to eliminate the human race. Fast forward to 2117. There are still pockets of humans who have been able to evade Kronos, the current survivors descendants of those who were able to survive in 2020. Purportedly, the largest pocket of resistance is in Aurora, its location which Kronos does not know. As such, Van Dorne, through Kronos, has created a robot in the form of a young human man to locate Aurora. He has created it the form and memory of a man who was in existence in 2020, Andrew Davis, the robot which truly does believe it is Andrew Davis with his memories. The robot is to befriend a young resistance fighter, Calia, who is trying to locate Aurora herself. Complications ensue as Van Dorne has created a robot arguably more human than humans themselves, that robot of Andrew which may ultimately work on his own human driven emotions.
Lately I've been seeing more and more sci-fi movies, which are actually a romantic dramas with a pretty standard Hollywoodish script. The only difference is, that these dramas are set in a sci-fi setting. Either in space, or far away in the future. In this movie, they had to pick. It was either going to be a pretty good sci-fi story, or a cheesy romance, exploited many times in Sci- Fi, but rarely touched in romantic movies. Well, they failed to decide so it turned out to be half decent Sci-fi plus half decent romantic story. And we all know that having two halves of different bills is not the same as having a single hundred-dollar bill.
The story is not new, but still it could be a very pleasant sci-fi. It unfolded so quickly, that if we remove the romantic part, it could pass for a trailer. Music score was heavily influenced by Blade Runner, acting was pretty bad (Even John Cusack could not save it). Camera guy was still learning, CGI's were decent.
They tried creating a huge movie with a dramatic story, set between among the stars. But to create such big thing, you need a lot of money. Obviously they did not have them and now it looks like a low- budget version of Star Gate. If they tried creating a 7-8 series out of this script, it could have had a huge success.
Plain and simple, this is not a very good movie. There are definitely some good aspects to it that I did appreciate, but right off the bat there are some glaringly obvious problems that will probably irk you, so lets get them out of the way quickly.
97 years after the robots have destroyed 8+ billion people and our heroine is walking around in new clothes and makeup like she's just had a makeover. She,(in fact both our leads) are always pristine, its totally ridiculous. She also has a crossbow, arrows, a new canteen, GPS tracker and in fact just seems to magic things from nowhere whenever they are needed. It's preposterous. There are incidents like this throughout the whole movie that continually jerk you from the setting as you wonder how 'this or that' would be 'just so' given the history of events.
Aside from those overtly obvious issues there are many others. The acting is poor, the cast is very small and only John Cusack and Carmen Argenziano are up to the task. The script is terrible, it's corny, stilted, and hackneyed. There is a pointless voice-over that accompanies many scenes with our two leads, but mostly it just describes on screen events. Kronos always knows where they are and has a holo-image of everything they do yet he's having difficulty finding aurora. That our leads continually do stupid things or behave atypically is a given. Much of the music is overdone. There is barely a scene without musical accompaniment and this rather than the acting is what unfortunately conveys most of the mood. This is just a handful of he problems, there's a lot more, but you get the point so I won't go on.
However its not all bad. Though most everything in this endeavour is B-movie standard, the visuals aren't. There is some great cinematography. The scenic shots are great, the sci-fi shots with the mekanoids are also quite impressive, and good shots, angles, and perspective detail throughout... in fact the whole visual portfolio seems to have been carefully planned, structured and executed. Some credit is due here to the camera and visual crew. It's only with the action sequences where shots degenerate to shaky camera action that leaves a lot to be desired. The sci-fi special effects are also pretty good.
The plot is actually a good one, a post apocalyptic one with a lot of promise. Unfortunately it's just been executed poorly and a lot more care and planning needed doing before this went to screen. Some tips from 'The Walking Dead' would not have gone amiss.
I think its main failing is you're never really pulled in into the story because of the distractions and weaknesses. At best you watch, but are on the outskirts of everything happening on screen and never really taken into the tale. Its a sure-fire mistake that marks many self indulgent interests that centre too much on the project rather than the movie as a piece of entertainment from the perspective of the audience. If I had to guess I would say there' an inexperienced director at the helm and maybe a sketchy production crew.
As I've said I think there are some good people involved in this project, but all in all, the movie isn't entertaining and I can't say its worth watching... sadly.
