In THE HUMAN RACE a group of 80 people are ripped out of their daily lives and all re-appear in an undisclosed location. These people are from all walks of life: young and old, athletic and disabled, white-collared and homeless. The rules to a race boom in their heads, in their own voice and language, laying out what will become a horrific race of terror: 'If you are lapped twice, you die. If you step off the path, you die. If you touch the grass, you will die. Race... or die.'
I'm not going to get irate about this movie as some other reviewers have done. I had some time to kill this afternoon and The Human Race wasted it perfectly. Sure, the acting was pretty bad, the 'storyline' was ridiculous, some of the devices were of questionable taste (exploding baby-bump, anyone?) and the script was 6th form at best, but it gets some stars for hooking me and making me watch until the end, if only to find out what the hell was going on. Which turned out to be some pretty sadistic aliens with more time on their hands than I had today. I don't understand why it was stated in the rules that the house, school, and prison were 'safe' when they clearly weren't, or how the deaf couple understood each other without actually signing to one another, and didn't enjoy the clumsy religious connotations, but overall the film served it's purpose for me, killed some time. If you like a gory romp with little or no plot, zero character development, an ultimately unsatisfactory conclusion, but plenty of the red stuff, and you have an hour or two of your life to waste, then The Human Race is for you.
I could forgive the low budget style of film making and less than stellar acting & effects, however the story was so poorly written and there's a whiff of misogyny within some of the dialogue and scenes that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
But then so much about this movie was in such poor taste (and I'm a huge horror fan who has seen countless bad horror movies).
There's a problem when the lead character is so unlikable I actually wanted to see him step on the grass. Overall the movie is a huge disappointment considering a potentially very interesting story line. The makers of this film didn't seem interested in telling a story, instead they took an interesting idea and just threw in enough violence and head explosions to gain an audience.
This is a laughably bad movie, but an amazing drinking game waiting to happen.
