When the crew of a downed British bomber escape from their Nazi captors with Top Secret intelligence, they make a desperate journey to get out of Germany alive.
When Flight Lt Forbes and his crew are shot down after bombing their target, they discover valuable information, about a hidden German aircraft factory, that must get back to England. In their way across Germany, they try and cause as much damage as possible. Then with the chasing Germans about to pounce, they come up with an ingenious plan to escape.
An Allied flag-waver from Warner Brothers, 'Desperate Journey' is a shallow concoction of baloney to hearten cinema audiences in Manchester and Montreal, Minneapolis and Melbourne with its flippant heroics and anglo-saxon 'can-do' buoyancy. Raoul Walsh's format is comedy-adventure, with plenty of punch-ups and car chase action. The whole thing smacks of a loosely assembled and ill-planned jaunt in which even the title is badly thought-out: far from being 'desperate', the trek through the Third Reich is a light-hearted romp.
A lone bomber (why?) sets off from an English airfield in 1942, heading for a German industrial town. After braving a German fighter attack and murderous anti-aircraft fire, the bomber crash-lands near the Polish border. The crew sets off on an odyssey across Germany, encountering lots of thrills on the way ...
There are many aspects of this film which are simply risible. The bomber crew sit in pairs in the cockpit, as if they were travelling on a London bus, with apparently no tasks to perform during the flight. Even allowing for the less sophisticated audience expectation of the time, the 'special effects' are feeble, the aircraft being very obviously plastic models. The crash sequence is meant to be high drama, but it is laughable. Alan Hale is an expert at surreptitious spitting (yes, spitting) and he makes goons of the German soldiers who capture our intrepid boys by dousing them in saliva. The Flippant Five are cheerfully insolent when questioned by the German major (Raymond Massey in a monocle), and they escape by knocking him out and then overpowering the guards and stealing their uniforms.
Of course, when they search the major's antique desk, our boys discover amazingly sensitive documents concerning a new German fighter aircraft. And naturally, when they sneak aboard a train, it happens to be the private rolling-stock of Reichsmarshall Goering. They ride to Berlin in the luxury car, smoking the deputy Fuhrer's cigars. They roam at will around Berlin, drinking beer and destroying factories which produce incendiary bombs. They find it easy to get in touch with the (thriving) anti-Nazi movement in the German capital.
Our indomitable heroes stumble onto a dastardly Nazi plan to bomb the Battersea Water Works (typical dirty German trick - it would prevent the London fire crews from tackling blazes caused by Nazi bombs). Once that danger has been dealt with, the lads say goodbye to the brave German resistance types ("still hoping, still fighting") and acquire a stolen car, which gets chased by Raymond Massey, the major who can cross Germany at will to pursue personal vendettas. The Nazis have a British plane ready, fuelled and armed, about to set off on some obscure nefarious Nazi below-the-belt project, so of course our boys steal it and fly it home. It happened all the time in World War Two.
Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan got their names above the title on this one. As Terry Forbes and Johnny Hammond respectively, they were the Australian and American interest (the crew also had a trusty Canadian and a plucky English kid). Max Steiner's music is grandiose and rich in knowing echoes of the European masters, but a little ponderous. The script is truly awful. One sample of the banter as our boys make do with a cellar in downtown Berlin will convey the flavour:
* I saw a rat eating its heart out. * Who was it - Goebbels? * Couldn't have been. It had a heart.
There are many similar passages, all in an ill-thought-out cocky style, but the worst is saved for last. As the lads bring the stolen plane in towards England, are they thinking of leaning on their laurels? No fear! Errol brings down the curtain with, "Now for Australia, and a crack at those Japs!"
"The Thief of Bagdad" director Raoul Walsh's "Desperate Journey" ranks as one of Errol Flynn's most entertaining but lightweight World War II propaganda war films. For the record, Flynn would make five wartime film for Warner Brothers: "Edge of Darkness," "Northern Pursuit," "Uncertain Glory," "Thank Your Luck Stars," and his best wartime epic "Objective, Burma," that made the world believe that Uncle Sam was winning the war single-handedly! Naturally, the British were not pleased with this ideology, and the film drew protests in the United Kingdom. In "Desperate Journey," Flynn, Ronald Reagan, Arthur Kennedy, Alan Hale, and Ronald Sinclair are cast as Allied fliers who survive the crash landing of their British bomber in enemy country. They have to bury their pilot, Squadron Leader Lane-Ferris (Patrick O'Moore) and then flee on foot through Nazi Germany. Our heroes do their best to dodge the Hun, but eventually they set out to commit sabotage in one of the most far-fetched, cliffhanger style plot. Quoting Forbes: "We're going to be the first invasion to hit Germany since Napoleon." Along the way, they lose two more of their own, and Flynn gets a moment or two of romance with pretty Nancy Coleman as a local who tries to help them. Of course, the Germans are ruthless in their pursuit. They manage to capture our heroes, but our guys don't loiter long before they escape them again. "Captains of the Clouds" scenarist Arthur T. Horman received screenplay credit, and Walsh and he keep our guys scrambling desperately with the Germans nipping at their heels the whole way. Indeed, the film lives up to its fast-paced title as Flynn and company make the Germans look like simple-minded goons. Their chief adversary, Major Otto Baumeister (Raymond Massey of "Santa Fe Trail") interrogates them, and one of the funniest scenes has Flying Officer Johnny Hammond (Ronald Reagan) telling them about the non-existent 'thermotrockle' on Allied planes. Hammond gleefully delivers enough double-talk to have your head spinning when he explains to Baumeister how a 'thermotrockle' works. "Thermotrockle amfilated through a daligonitor. Of course, this is made possible because the dernadyne has a franicoupling." Reportedly, Flynn wanted those lines for himself. The Government's Office of War Information didn't appreciate the way that Hollywood portrayed the enemy and made the war look like a lark. Ultimately, our guys steal a captured British bomber and fly back to England. In an appropriately heroic ending, Forbes vows next to take on the Japanese with the last line in the film: "Now for Australia and a crack at those Japs!" This Warner Brothers' nonsense painted an idealized picture of war when it wasn't slipping patriotic messages about the Allies down our collective throats. Naturally, Flynn is as gallant and foolhardy as ever as Flight Lieutenant Terrence Forbes who is tired of flying ice wagons (i.e. bombers) and wants to get into a Spitfire. Kennedy plays the level-head navigator who takes things seriously, while Alan Hale acts as their scrounger. "Desperate Journey" is a lot of rip-snorting fun.
