A former L.A. drug dealer has moved to Houston to make a new life for himself as a married architect. Everything falls apart when he is suddenly visited by one of his former cohorts who comes carrying heroin. Discovering the dope, the architect flushes it down the drain. This sets up a series of tough customers seeking the dope including a Rasta hit-man, an ex-lover Dallas who ties him up and rapes him, a criminal called Billy with a penchant for torture, and a rogue cop. The movie opens in a Los Angeles convenience store one late Monday night, where a smalltime drug dealer named Nick (Aaron Eckhart) is trying to decide what coffee brand to buy. His ex-lover Dallas (Paulina Porizkova) and fellow hitman Billy Hill (James LeGros) are getting impatient and tell him to hurry up. Conflicts between Nick and the cashier (Luck Hari) ensue, resulting in Dallas shooting the cashier dead. Though the three attempt to cover up the crime, they are forced to also shoot a police officer (Bari K. Willerford) when he discovers blood on the ground. This film is such a blatant Tarantino ripoff it almost works as an (unintentional) comedy. An instant drinking game classic, simple take a drink whenever the flick plagarises Pulp Fiction/Reservoir Dogs. The reason I found it so laughably bad is because it takes itself so seriously. The untalented cretins who worked on this film obviously thought they were making a powerful crime thriller. It doesn't involve, it doesn't entertain and it certainly doesn't shock. It bites. Hard. See it with a 6 pack, have a few laughs, talk back to the screen and you might get your 99 cent rental value out of it. Woeful. Graphic realism, that isn't always realistic. And an inevitable blow-job of a captive hero (a la Swordfish). The plot-line is delightful, if entirely unbelievable. People here get bugged by the comparison to Pulp Fiction, but it's a lot like that, even if it's a lot different. Very hard to buy that someone who was that bad suddenly got that good, and then knew how to get that bad again. Very low budget production - it was in fact astounding (like the end of Blade Runner when you're finally up and away out of the L.A. fog) to have it end at the airport with a private jet. The ending is a tad too neat, like Swordfish, tied with a pretty bow. Some have compared this to Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels - no comparison in my opinion. Guy Ritchie doesn't mix genres - he sticks with comedy and absurdity. Woods tries too hard to make it believable when it's completely unbelievable. I should add that I saw this last night on cable (didn't even know it existed) and two-thirds of the dialogue (no exaggeration) was cut. 646f9e108c
