Earth is on the brink of extinction due to pollution and environmental disasters. In order to survive, humans create a shielded city called Ecoban that organically grows on its own, feeding on the earth¡¯s pollution. However, only a select few are allowed to live in the shielded city, leaving many to perish in the waste of the wilderness. Soon, there are reports that pollution levels are dropping, giving people hope that the entire Earth will once again be safe to live in. Conflicts arise after some city officials decide to continually pollute the earth so they can enjoy the prestige of living inside of Ecoban. Meanwhile, an intruder breaks into Ecoban as security frantically rushes to the scene of the crime. Jay, one of the leaders of the security unit, chases down the intruder only to find out that it¡¯s her first love, Suha. Previously assumed dead, Suha returns to Ecoban as a criminal, reminding Jay of his promise to her; that one day he will show her a blue sky, something that has been gone for too long. Now Jay feels torn between her long lost love and her civil duty as city security. Furthermore, Simon, the head of security and also in love with Jay, finds out about Suha¡¯s existence.
In the future, after the human civilization ended by war and pollution, only those few people who had the power and technology escaped the disaster. Those people built the last human city of Ecoban. As its energy source is the pollutant, the people of Ecoban plan to destroy the inhabitants of Marr to get more pollutant. Standing against Ecoban is a young man who wants only to clear the skies of the clouds to show the wonderful heavens to the girl he loves.
Never mind the graphics (which at times is both dis-jointed and stunning), the flat characters and bad dialog or the predictable plot, the film is an homage to American action movies. It's all a tribute to Clint, Arnie, Spaghetti Westerns, Thunderbirds, Mad Max and bad 70's movies. The scene where the hero's head rises from the water is right out of Apocalypse Now. I thought at any time he'd say "Make my day". the English language edition is masterfully done. Many Christian overtones are also present also bringing in a large part of modern Korean and global society. I understand the budget and box office sales for this movie were huge. Although it seems quite amateur, I'm sure that was the intention. Certainly worth viewing again under a magnified, slow motion.
A lot of people are knocking Wonderful Days because of it's fairly conventional story content. While I agree that it would of been a bolder choice to go for something a little more adventurous, and follow the examples set by writers such as Kazinori Ito (Ghost in the Shell, Avalon), you've got to remember that this film was a big risk because of it's budget. The story had to be kept straightforward in order to be appreciable to the largest possible audience. Korea basically wanted to put themselves firmly at the forefront of the anime market in terms of technology, and although wonderful days' plot feels a little basic, it really doesn't stop this film from striking a chord emotionally (helped by the incredible score), as well as wowing the viewer with it's technical brilliance.
I'd also like to mention that the film's background architecture and location shots are achieved primarily by shooting miniatures through a motion-control camera. An earlier review (think it was Mike M), mentions the "over" use of CGI, but never once concentrates on the miniature work that was used far more frequently than computer effects. Just thought I would mention this as the blending of the miniature models and cell animation is so well integrated that all the backgrounds could indeed be mistaken for CGI to the casual viewer. The only scenes that were 100% CG elements afaik were the Ecoban motorcycle scenes. It's really nice to see traditional anime-style mixed with CGI elements and also miniatures in such a perfect balance, and nothing ever looks out of place in Wonderful Days.
I loved Wonderful Days. It was genuinely beautiful to watch, had a fantastic epic score, and despite the simple story it still manages to hold the attention throughout. The production company (Tin House) really pulled out all the stops with the visuals, and I just hope this film does well in the global market. Hopefully then, we will start to see more high quality Korean anime with stronger plot and narrative. Great movie.
The pic plays like one long chase. Nevertheless, fashioned with ultra-sophisticated means, Sky Blue will be a must-see for anime fans around the world.
