In 1999, Claire's life is forever changed after she survives a car crash. She rescues Sam and starts traveling around the world with him. Writer Eugene follows them and writes their story, as a way of recording dreams is being invented.
Sometimes-muddled road movie-turns-sci fi. Hurt plays a man who is traveling the world taking pictures with a special camera that will enable the blind to see (specifically, his blind mother). He meets up with Dommartin on the way, and they predictably hit it off. Set in 1999, a subplot about a nuclear satellite that has fallen to earth and presumably destroyed civilization only adds to the confusion.
How did William Hurt's gas pain ever get cast in movies? The female lead must be related to Wenders b/c she can't act, either. Sam Neill walks around in a daze and his narration is a sure sign of a failed movie.
There is interesting photography here but barely a trace of a plot.
It's fitting that a movie so pretentious, bloated and dull would feature a soundtrack that includes U2, R.E.M. and Depeche Mode, among others.
Credit where it's due - whatsername takes her clothes off just often enough to keep things interesting.
If I had paid money to see this in a theatre I would never again pay to see another Wenders movie and I'd make it my goal on social media to convince others to follow my lead. He makes Terrence Malick look like Tony Scott by comparison.
I am shocked anyone would give this git five bucks to film a movie. He doesn't have a clue.
From the very beginning, you're taken into this film's intertwining laces as you soar high above the 'unknown land' of Claire's(Solveig Dommartin) dream. Her grace and and melancholious drift through a world scared to death of being annihilated is fascinating beyond explanation. She seems to hardly care about the events that surround her, until she meets 'Trevor MacPhee.' Most seem to dislike the patchy references towards the manhunt, but I think it is not only fitting but perfect in giving the viewer only as much information as Claire or Gene (Sam Neill) receives. The story line seems to touch the very depths of my human understanding in a way no other film has done for me. 'The soul singing to the only God it knows' is a fantastic set up for the second half of the picture. The ability to view one's dreams, the untold, locked away secrets of the soul never ceases to both enrapture and terrify me. An all-around unbelievable piece of work set to music that seems to have been written solely for the film.
