Harley Quinn tries to impress her love while the origin of her career as The Joker's sidekick is revealed.
If "Growing Pains" doesn't top my "Best Episodes" list, this will. I may have been in a drought for a few episodes now, but this is like a thunderstorm for 3 weeks straight. And it's the most enjoyable thunderstorm I've ever been in. This might be the darkest episode of "The New Batman Adventures", themes of domestic violence, family violence, manipulation, and battered women syndrome all combine to an unforgettable story. Not only do we get Harley's origin story, but we also see just how cruel Joker can be, I mean he throws Harley out a window. But like with a lot of fantastic episodes, it finds the perfect balance for everything. One second it's funny, the next it's disturbing and mature, one never overshadows the other. Everyone puts in a great performance, and Dini and Timm are on top of their game with the writing. I would love to read the story this is based off of, but the episode is as close to flawless as you could get.
Now this is what I'm talking about.
'Mad Love' is one of the great Batman comics, and this stands as a worthy adaptation (I wish it were pre-revamp character designs, but that's unavoidable). Harley Quinn was always a terrific character and she finally gets her own backstory - and it's full of humor, pathos, drama, all the good stuff. Credit to Arleen Sorkin for making Harley's situation lovably psychotic, but also beholden to a cruel relationship. Hamill, as well, for making the Joker entertaining even while he's beating the life out of his lady.
It's a common tale of spousal abuse, but fits very well within the context of this series.
