When news magnate James Reid dies, his son Britt and chauffeur Kato, resentful of Reid's slights, vandalize a graveyard statue. By chance, they also rescue a couple from thugs, but TV reports the vandalism, not the heroism. Britt, thinking he's a genius while relying on Kato's mechanical and kung-fu skills, decides to be a superhero, the Green Hornet, and use his father's paper to play up the bad-guy elements. The reporting on the Hornet upsets LA's DA, who's up for reelection, and the city's real crime boss, Chudnofsky. Plus, how long will Kato suffer in silence, when he has all the skill? Competition for the affection of Britt's assistant, Lenore, brings things to a head.
Playboy Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) becomes the new publisher of Los Angeles' "The Daily Sentinel" after the sudden death of his father. Britt's party life is about to change when he and his driver and kung fu expert, Kato (Jay Chou), stop a robbery. With the help of Kato, Britt starts a new career of fighting crime as the masked superhero "The Green Hornet".
Surprisingly, this film is actually pretty good. Not in the same league as Superman I/II, or the 1989 Batman, but fun and exciting. Definitely better than the recent Fantastic Four films.
It moves quick, and the dialogue is snappy and funny, the fight scenes are good, and the CGI tends not to be obvious. There are very good car chase sequences, and the Black Beauty is actually a supporting actor here. The plot is actually fairly clever, and there is a little bit of substance to it, to my surprise.
Seth Rogan plays Seth Rogan, he's not Al Hodge or Van Williams, and I accepted this from the start. I was OK with this, as I find Seth likable. The whole notion of a grown man becoming a super-hero is a pretty risky notion as far as credibility goes, it could easily become too ridiculous for the audience to sustain credibility. This problem is resolved by having the eponymous character being a goofy guy with questionable judgement.
Also, I tend to prefer the more 'fun' type of comic book movie, like the Iron Man films Vs. the Chris Nolan Batman films, which IMO hit you over the head every 2 minutes trying to show how serious they are...I know I'm in the minority, but I find Nolan's Batman films to be oppressive. Also, IMO they take themselves too seriously, thus becoming unintentionally funny. I prefer the humor to be intentional.
The film is worth seeing by a comics fan because of Kato and the Black Beauty, and if you can handle Seth Rogan as a hero. It's worth seeing in a theater if you see it in 3D and are in the mood for escapism. If you don't want to pay for the 3D, I advise waiting for home video or the el cheapo cinema in your area.
First off I love comic, hero, sci-fi, weapons, action movies... But overall I thought this movie blew. Main reason I believe was Seth Rogen and I don't know if I should blame him, his character, or the way he was directed to act. In any case I found myself bored, annoyed and tempted to turn it off more than a few times, but I actually did make it to the end hard to believe.
Please understand I love action, Sci-Fi, marvel & comic book style movies, so it brings me some pain to write such a negative review on this type of a movie and I hope some others get some enjoyment out of this, and while I believe a successful "Spoof" on a superhero movie can certainly be made, this wasn't it by any stretch...
Maybe it's that whole Will Ferrell / Seth Rogen stupid comedian acting which I kind of loath as I just don't find them funny at all and while I don't necessarily loath Seth Rogen per say like I do Will Ferrell, but in this movie all he did was just annoy me with his stupidity to no end. Whether it's the real world or the fake one in movies, there's just nothing more frustrating and insulting than an idiot in charge, which this movie just seems to glorify. I guess the only audience I could recommend this type of a movie to is Will Ferrell / Seth Rogen / stoner fans as this movie overall has little to offer anyone who isn't inebriated off something
In a last-minute tweak, the production has also been meaninglessly 3-D-ified - never mind that there's nothing whatsoever 3-D-ish going on. Maybe those clumsy 3-D glasses are meant to let moviegoers mimic the superhero mask-wearing experience?
It's best to let Rogen himself speak about this subject. From WorstPreviews.com: Seth Rogen, writer and co-star of the upcoming The Green Hornet, told Sci Fi Wire that the film will possess elements of both comedy and action. "To me, the two aren't mutually exclusive," said Rogen. "You can have a big action epic with a lot of funny parts." Green Hornet is a big-screen adaptation of the superhero franchise, which was adapted as a popular 1960s television series and was inspired by the original radio program created in the 1930s. Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato, who has incredible martial-arts skills. Rogen, whose film projects to date have been primarily comedic in nature, said that the forthcoming update will evoke other action films that feature an undercurrent of humor. "I've seen the early 'Indiana Jones' movies in theaters, and they kill," Rogen said. "There's laughs throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't feel like a comedy per se. It just feels like something that's trying to solicit reactions from the audience, and we think of movies like 'True Lies' and stuff like that. That's more kind of what we're going for with this." Director Michel Gondry also has said this about the film's tone: "It's an action movie with some comedy in it. The action will be fast and furious and the comedy will come from the dynamic between Kato and Britt Reid." Reportedly, he stepped down to work on a superhero spoof comedy starring Jack Black.
