Rene, a small-time beauty queen, is forced to move out of her hometown of Berkeley, a sleepy town in Queensland, due to financial problems. However, barely had she started the journey when meteors start raining down from the sky, turning all those hit into zombies. In an attempt to escape, she stumbles upon a small group of survivors, and together, they must fight their way out of town. However, one of the survivors firmly believes it is more than just a simple zombie outbreak--it is part of a bigger conspiracy.
A quaint Australian fishing village is overcome by meteorites that turn its residents into the ravenous undead, leaving a small group of those unharmed to find a way out.
If you've seen a fair amount of zombie movies, it's hard to watch yet another. However, this one's not altogether bad.
The first half is pretty a standard, brainless zombie movie. It is completely similar in activity to every other zombie movie and therefore hard to sit through. However, there is some 'edge' to each of the scenes - which make the zombie encounters slightly better than average.
By about the last third, this movie gets better by moving towards a larger idea which explains the situation the characters are in and allows the events to come to some sort of finality. This departs from most zombie movie story lines in which the reason for the zombie presence is either very simplistic or left unexplained.
Despite some good scenes and a better-than-average storyline, this movie wasn't able to hold my interest. It was clever, but not engaging. See it if you're a zombie fan, but pass otherwise.
I've seen quite a few positive reviews of this movie, which, quite frankly, disgust me. This movie is apparently trying to be a comedy/drama/horror/sci-fi flick at the same time...none of which are executed well. A bad comedian in rainbow suspenders is funnier than this movie. Seriously, this movie is not funny unless you have a very, very simple sense of humor. In fact, the only funny thing about this movie is the reviews on the back cover. "Everything about this film is exceptional" - Harry Knowles. I'd say this movie was exceptional if someone passed me a check, too.
The acting in this movie is so atrocious I'm hesitant to even call it acting at all. They blame it on a low budget; doing one or two takes for most scenes. This doesn't make it commendable, though. The plot is original, but executed very poorly. The visuals were average, the plot was "loose" at best, and the characters were just plain lame and uninteresting.
It truly was a pain to finish this film and I can tolerate a lot of crap in movies. I was so enraged that I paid $7 for this trash; I literally blew it to smithereens with a 20-gauge shotgun the day after I viewed it.
Is this movie funny? No. Is it scary in any way? No. Is it interesting? No. Is it worth watching? Not even in the slightest bit. PLEASE don't torture yourself and rent/buy this movie. Heck, don't even watch it for free.
Flesh-eating fish notwithstanding, Peter and Michael Spierig's low-budget schlock-horror parody brings precious little new to the undead genre.
