Frozen in the ice for decades, Captain America is freed to battle against arch-criminal, The Red Skull. During World War II, a brave, patriotic American Soldier undergoes experiments to become a new supersoldier, "Captain America." Racing to Germany to sabotage the rockets of Nazi baddie "Red Skull", Captain America winds up frozen until the 1990s. He reawakens to find that the Red Skull has changed identities and is now planning to kidnap the President of the United States. This is by far the worst movie I have ever seen. It was plain and simply a horrible film. Some awful films are great to watch and bring genuine excitement to the viewer as he/she laughs hysterical at the awful development. This movie had none of that and in fact made me cry. Have you ever watched a movie and felt uncomfortable watching it because it was so awful? Well, if you have, then you know what i'm talking about. If you haven't, watch this movie and you'll quickly realize what i'm talking about. I've always liked this film because it's perhaps the only superhero movie of it's period that attempted to address real-world issues. Most superhero films of the Seventies-to-Nineties were set in their own self-contained worlds: Tim Burton's Batman effectively exists in a bubble - a weird Gothic parallel universe called Gotham City, into which the outside world does not intrude. And even when Christopher Reeve's Superman goes globe trotting, it's only to picture-postcard locations full of landmarks familiar to American tourists (the Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Great Wall of China, etc). Granted, 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace' had Supes trying to tackle the wider issue of the nuclear arms race, but it did so in simplistic terms and ultimately copped out as the final credits ran.

Hand-in-hand with this movie's real-world setting is it's unrelentingly cynical tone. Considering that it's a family adventure film about the most patriotic of America's superheroes, the script is surprisingly bleak and anti-American. The USA is portrayed as having been controlled since the end of WWII by a shadowy and corrupt cadre of industrialists, Pentagon generals, CIA chiefs, war-profiteers and kingmakers. The President is merely their corporate puppet, and if he gets out of line he'll simply be assassinated and replaced (the film openly states it's belief that JFK, his brother, Martin Luther King and others were all murdered by those who pull America's strings).

The Red Skull therefore isn't the movie's grand supervillain, responsible for all the ills of the world, but instead is simply the employee, the operative, the troubleshooter, of the real villains - those who secretly rule America. And the Skull being recruited by this powerful elite has real-life parallels in Operation Paperclip, the exercise in which numerous useful Nazis were smuggled out of Europe at the end of WWII to either assist with American's space programme or help create the organisation that become the CIA.

It's also noteworthy that all the Skull's underlings are incredibly good-looking men and women, who would be equally at home on the catwalk or appearing in a high-profile advertising campaign. The message is that the Allies may have defeated Germany, but our subsequent obsession with body image, constant fad dieting, gym membership, botox and plastic surgery, shows that the Western World has ironically embraced the impossible Nazi ideal of a physically perfect Master Race.

For all these reasons, I consider Captain America as being a very under-rated film. Apparently the original director's cut was two and a half hours long, and I'd love to see it. The movie was directed by Albert Pyun which apparently seemed to have similar consequences as his most famous movie Cyborg. After differences during the production process, the studio altered the movie quite heavily and the final cut didn't have much in common with Pyun's original version. Furthermore, the scheduled theatrical release was postponed several until the movie was released direct-to video in 1992.

The Director's Cut

...is available on disc 2 of the 3-Disc-Set from Pyun's homepage and it's approx. 14 minutes longer than the regular US-Version. Unfortunately, the end result isn't as spectacular as expected due to its history. There's just a longer block of scenes in the middle of the movie which is a nice charakter development. The new footage proves the stronger focus of Captain America's inner conflict. Besides new footage, some footage has simply been recycled as flashback. As already mentioned, it's rather unspectacular and it doesn't look very professional either.

The Commentary Version

AS mentioned before, the Director's Cut (differing from the Original Version) is only available on Pyun's homepage. The customer always receives a 3-Disc-Set whereas the 3rd disc contains a newer production of Pyun's company. Technicalla, the first 2 discs BOTH contain Pyun's favorite version (verifiable due to the alternate beginning and the flashback at the end) but there's still a difference of several minutes which is confusing. But don't worry, the following comparison will shed some light on it.

Disc 1 contains the unedited workprint with a director's commentary track instead of the regular audio track (there's a black screen for 4 minutes at the beginning which contains nothing but Pyun's voice). In this commentary, Pyun mentions his plans to edit this version for a future release on Blu-ray. 646f9e108c
