Five substance-abusing friends decide to fake a kidnapping in order to bribe a police constable for covering-up a hit-and-run accident.
After the passing of her mother, and the entry of a step-mother, Amrita Jayshankar retreats into herself. Her father is summoned to her school and is told that his daughter may require counseling, but he refuses to believe and instead makes a donation to the school. Then Amrita meets with three males and a female, namely Zuben, Dushant Sahu, Karan Chaudhary; and Tanya Sharma respectively. Together they live it up with drugs and alcohol until things get out of control when they accidentally kill a couple. A corrupt police constable demands Rs.25 Lakhs to eliminate their involvement. Unable to come up with so much cash, the five decide to fake a kidnapping, demand the cash from Amrita's father, and clear their respective names. Amrita accordingly goes 'missing', and her father involves the police, who assign this case to once-suspended police inspector, Arvind Mathur. With the media getting involved, Arvind begins his investigation, but will soon find it hampered - complicating not only his assignment - but also his personal life.
Shaitan speaks about the devil inside each of us, the devil who might take over us when we our own life is in trouble. It also speaks about the corrupt system, its flaws and the people who manipulate the system making use of their indecipherable power.
The movie revolves around a group of five young troubled spoiled brats in Mumbai, who as usual have issues with their lives.
Spiced up with some offensively witty scenes and dialogues, which is a good thing considering the plot of the movie, the movie is targeted towards the youth and does offer what any regular new age individual would look for in the movie. All the five lead actors seemed appropriate for their characters but for me Gulshan Devaiya as K.C. did a fabulous job among the five. Apart from him, Rajeev Khandelwal performed flawlessly in playing the role of a cop and I was immensely pleased to see Raj Kumar Yadav as a shady police officer. His part was short but he could not have done it better, in fact, he was the perfect choice for that character.
But even though the flick was filled with good performances all around and even better direction, it lacked excitement. The whole dish didn't seem to tempt me anytime throughout the meal. It was predictable at times and the idea of rebellious spoiled brats is becoming stale now. This movie is definitely worth watching once or maybe twice for some people, but it is nothing extraordinary and didn't leave me wondering or wanting for more.
The glamorous trailers, young and fresh star cast, music but the biggest of all Rajeev Khandelwal impressed me a lot in the trailers and movie too. But if we see the movie keeping in mind that it is Anurag Kashyap's flick i think the movie was disappointing. The first half of the movie is quite good and lifts up really well but too fast. The shaitan moments were there but they were way too less. The moment you will realize that you are having fun watching this one, it will take a serious turn which i think could have been delayed because the second half goes too slow showing some unimportant and regular flashbacks of Amy played by Kalki. But still movie will keep you tight because it has something very unique to offer. I mean who have ever remixed and played an old song during a shooting sequence scene in a busy market. The presence and great acting by Rajeev Khandelwal will take many girl's heart.In his few scenes,he steals the movie quietly with his funny yet serious sense of humor.Movie also have some big gaps in 2nd half which if told here will destroy your viewing experience. Although its a very normal kidnapping movie with weak script told in a stylish way. 2 out of 5 for this attempt by the makers but 1 extra for Rajeev Khandelwal and the music which will stay for a long time in your play-list.
