A federal witness runs away and a team of government agents track him down, but when they take a shortcut on the return trip, they're attacked by zombies.
Smith, a mob informer hiding out with the Witness Protection Program, decides to make a break for it and hide out in the Arizona desert. The Feds catch up with him and rescue him just before a group of hitmen can manage to silence him for good. In the course of getting Smith away from the mafia thugs, the pair of agents assigned to protect him turn onto an abandoned stretch of highway nicknamed 'Route 666' after the mysterious death of a prison chain gang. As the three continue on their way, they soon discover just what happened to the chain gang, and how the highway earned its name.
Come on, give me a break. You see Route 666 on the sign and you turn down that road? Nobody, even if they are trying to save time, would get on a road with that name. You are just asking for trouble, and the folks in this ghost story got what they asked for.
I like Lou Diamond Phillips, even if he'll always be Ritchie Valens to me. I also like Lori Petty and L.Q. Jones. They both keep popping up in movies and TV shows. In fact, the cast in this film has done a lot of work, so maybe you'll find someone you like.
I certainly don't have high expectations when I watch a "B" movie, but I hoped to be entertained. This film did that. Sure, you get the same tired clichés and some people tend to act like jerks (Dale Midkiff), but the ghost aspect was pretty cool, and added to the horrible deaths.
Give it a whirl if you have nothing else to watch.
I eagerly sat down to watch ROUTE 666, as I thought the director's previous work, SCARECROWS, was amazing. What happened??? ROUTE 666 is without a doubt one of the dumbest pieces of work I've ever seen. Rude and offensive, I'm so sick of movies where the "good guys" act worse than the supposed bad guys. Lou Diamond Phillips seems to be making a career out of playing uber-tough cops (BORING!) who don't seem to care about breaking the laws they're supposed to enforce (see "24" and the god-awful FIRST POWER, in which Phillips breaks into a person's house with no search warrant--his partner says, "You can't do that!" and Phillips replies, "I can do anything I want!" Nice hero, huh?). I actually wanted the asphalt zombies to kill the federal marshalls. Too bad they didn't finish the job. And L.D. Phillip's character is outraged at the murder of four psychotic killers, but treats his prisoner (a Mafia witness whose only crime is that he's trying to save his life by not testifying) like crap?
And the strobing effect every time the zombies were on screen has got to be the most irritating visual horror effect since the rapid back-and-forth zooming in MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND. Oh, and shouldn't the jackhammer have made some noise? Those things are capable of blowing out eardrums, but this one sounded like a clicking pen.
Someone out there should apologize for this waste of celluloid.
