A look at Germany's terrorist group, The Red Army Faction (RAF), which organized bombings, robberies, kidnappings and assassinations in the late 1960s and '70s. Germany in the 1970s: Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the yet fragile German democracy. The radicalised children of the Nazi generation lead by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he's only dealing with the tip of the iceberg. Terrorism by the State, and terrorism by it's citizens are both despicable. Even worse is letting agents of a repressive foreign regime beat down another people in their own country in front of their own police. It's almost unimaginable, except that it happened. With that said, Andreas Baader was nothing' but a two bit outlaw accustomed to getting his own way by bullying everyone around him into submission.

There was nothing noble, altruistic, or virtuous in anything he said or did - just selfishness and oppression. He wasn't part of any revolution, it was nothing but a cover for as much criminal activity as he could possibly get away with before he was taken down. He was the only big fish in the very small pond of his followers, and he liked it that way.

Germany had been so badly beaten in the two biggest wars the world had ever seen, and was a very fragile democracy that was uncertain of it's own authority. Only in the modern age of media could a myth be born of such social detritus. The movie was well made and well acted, but the subject was not worth shining any light on - not even the light of a projector. He wasn't fighting tyranny, he was the tyrant . . .

fullgrownministry.com Who can say? Maybe being an American and utterly disgusted with this sort of Euro-Terrorism of the 70's to begin with, the sort where spoiled children rebel against the plenty they've been given, I find this far too forgiving of those fools who decided to kill for no apparent reason.

Perhaps European, or German, sensibilities can find something valuable or redeemable in the creatures portrayed here. I cannot.

When these homegrown German terrorists find themselves in prisons, it's a strange view from an American eye -- they seem in luxury. An American isolated prison cell is far from what is portrayed here. It is dank, and none too pleasant. Nothing like a gulag, but hardly like what seems here.

Perhaps the most disgusting thing about the movie, though I cannot say it is inaccurate -- I merely hope it is inaccurate - is the weakness with which the German government deals with these fools. A long but powerful true-life drama of 1970s German terrorists features masterful storytelling and bravura performances. It is not unusual that several German high profile productions, esp. those co-financed by the big German public-service broadcasters, are being extended for their television premieres and shown in two parts. With Der Baader Meinhof Komplex it's not different and an Extended Television Version was created as well. This cut runs approx. 15 minutes longer than the Theatrical Version. Unfortunately this prolonged version doesn't add that much to the movie. This is a famous event from recent German history but will likely be baffling to many non-Germans unfamiliar with German history. The event depicted is the killing of Benno Ohnesorg by West German police officer Karl-Heinz Kurras. Ohnesorg had gone to a demonstration protesting the appearance of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, at the opera. People were protesting the Shah's brutal policies in ruling Iran which included torture and the use of secret police (both sensitive subjects in West Germany since the fall of the Nazis). This was the first political protest Ohnesorg had attended and the event quickly turned into a riot as police, the Shah's security, and protesters clashed outside the opera. During the mayhem, Ohnesorg, who was unarmed, was shot in the back of the head by a West German policeman named Karl-Heinz Kurras. As shown in the movie, a photographer shot an iconic photograph of a woman cradling Ohnesorg as he lay dying and this photograph was widely reprinted in the media. Kurras claimed he had shot Ohnesorg accidentally, and he was acquitted of wrongdoing in two trials. The brutal cold blooded slaying of of an innocent German family man trying to exercise his right to protest, as well as the acquittals of his murderer, sparked protests throughout West Germany and is generally credited by German historians as giving new energy to leftist German groups. While mainstream leftists moved the Federal Republic of Germany away from its conservative Nazi past and towards a more progressive politics, radical leftists like the RAF carried out more violent actions.

Interestingly enough, in the 21st century, after the communist regimes in East Germany and Russia had fallen, it was revealed that at the time of the shooting, and for many years before, Karl-Heinz Kurras had secretly been a devoted communist and an agent of the Stasi, the East German intelligence service. After this revelation some wondered whether Kurras, whose shooting of Ohnesorg had always been perplexing to most Germans, had acted under orders from his East German handlers as an agent provocateur. However, both Kurras and former Stasi members deny this and it would seem to make little sense for him to have killed Ohnesorg on orders from East Berlin. Before the Ohnesorg killing, Kurras had been a powerful member of the West German police unit charged with uncovering communist moles, a valuable position for the East Germans. After the killing, Kurras became politically radioactive and ended his career in the traffic unit. 646f9e108c
