Five friends from 'Maaskantje' are being fired because of the economic crisis. They decide not to pay for anything anymore. They're stealing beer and food, while the police tries to end their efforts. Unfortunately, the cop from Maaskantje is unable to stop the five friends so the minister of defense decides to send help....

Why this movie is such a great success can be derived from the extremely negative comments above. This isn't a movie of great acting, screenplay, story or something which usually decides whether a movie is good or not. This movie shows insight into the cultural emptiness of the dutch lower classes. Because of that it's full of culture and refers mostly to the trends in the nineties. The hardcore music, the sportswear, the mopeds, the low sentence and even the 'opel manta' are examples of that. All dutch people sometimes have dinner at a 'friture' which significantly differs from a fast-food restaurant, though its purpose is the same. So that makes even the 'friture' part of dutch culture. Everything is tremendously recognizable for the nineties generation. The secret of this success lies in the way the characters were already formed and set for action in the short-series, which were broadcast two years before this release. Everybody knew what was coming and hoped it would be just like these series. Well it was... even better... or worse, whatever. Why are these guys so hilarious? Because they are serious... They had lousy jobs, no girlfriends, no perspective. If you will think the movie over, you should notice that these boys hardly make any jokes. But they act so empty-minded that even the dumbest person on earth would say: "These guys are really stupid." But if you look closer, you'll discover that they aren't really dumb. They are just utilizing their freedom (maybe dutch freedom) by drinking beer, smoking weed, stealing, harassing people and swearing all the time. The ultimate freedom: Parisiting on the dull establishment. Everybody wants to do that now and then, more or less. Retired millionaires also parasite on the dull establishment in some sense, don't they? These poor fellows also like doing nothing all day, don't you understand???? In a deeper meaning they reflect the desire of everybody who is part of the dull establishment and isn't a millionaire. In some way it's even a feel-good-movie, for people who can handle the rudeness of the boys from Maaskant.
I ended up finding a Scooter Song, the re-released version of "Friends", when it turned out to be a music video to this movie. Had to watch it. Fortunately I managed to view it using my German skills and the English subtitles. And I have to say: MAASKANTJE!
I am absolutely amazed by the actors, the story-line seemed to be a bit flat at some cases, but it showed a nice story of friends of 5, losing their job, and fighting their way through that. Some scenes were quite funny, and since we also have similar movies, like Üvegtigris (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0257290/) yet I always tell my friends about the movie, that it is a mix of "Beavis and Butthead" and our Glass Tiger (Üvegtigris). They quickly get the idea...
I have never been in the Netherlands, but this movie made me to get around to Noord-Brabant, and visit the famous place, and all the other places the movie was filmed. Hard to believe, that the actors are just everyday guys, and their lifestyle doesn't even seem to be close to the one seen in the movie. This is what I call excellent work and acting! Fabulous work guys!
...now where do I get my hands on some of those "Schulten-Bräu" beers?
