The story of ordinary men during WWII as seen from three different points of View. THE FALLEN is a three-sided story about German, Italian, and American soldiers, set in Northern Italy during the final weeks of the World War II. On the one side, a group of American supply soldiers delivers ammunition to the front line, a journey that becomes a descent into hell, the success of the mission becomes less likely with every setback. On the other, a doomed German unit and their ragtag Italian partners struggle to maintain morale and discipline amongst their beleaguered troops in the face of certain defeat. Torn between these are the divided loyalties of the Italians, both fascist soldiers and communist partisans, who have turned brother against brother in a bloody civil war. The film looks at the everyday life of the soldiers, their encounters on the road, their hopes and dreams, and the differences in values, morals, and patriotism between the cultures at the end of that era. Ari Taub takes on an immense project of independently shooting a war film set during WWII. Despite the numerous industry warnings against doing period films, Ari pulls it off with an engaging film, good characters, and an impressive production design. The production design for this film is stellar. The Italian actors are fantastic creating very engaging and likable characters. I should note here that this film is in three languages (Italian, German and English) and I applaud Ari maintaining this aspect to his story instead of making everyone speak English. The story is good, faithful to the large ensemble genre of post-WWII war film dramas. If anything, this film proves that Ari Taub is a capable, resourceful and ambitious director with a bright future and ability to deliver above expectation and means. "The Fallen" is worth a view and praise for everything accomplished by the cast, crew, and producers making this independent film. This movies is worth watching. I seen the so-call outstanding movie Saving Private Ryan; this movie is far, far better! This movie gives a excellent view, to me, of what it REALLY was like in the Italian campaign both with the Americans, Germans, partisans & especially the Italian soldiers. This movie and All Quiet On the Western Front are my best war movies. It is far better then Saving Private Ryan because the story line for Private Ryan is stupid, who would (being in their right mind) send a squad of soldiers into a combat zone to retrieve another soldier. There could of been other ways (communication wise) to contact the field unit to retrieve the soldier without risking lives to do it. Yes, Saving Private Ryan is an overrated film. I'll end this review on the movie The Fallen by saying again, see the movie! It's an ensemble piece with a dark, salty mood that reminded me of Robert Altman and Robert Aldrich, with a touch of Francis Ford Coppola. It's notably non-"gung ho." 646f9e108c
