Following the death of his father, Britt Reid, heir to his father's large company, teams up with his late dad's assistant Kato to become a masked crime fighting team.
When news magnate James Reid dies, his son Britt and chauffeur Kato, resentful of Reid's slights, vandalize a graveyard statue. By chance, they also rescue a couple from thugs, but TV reports the vandalism, not the heroism. Britt, thinking he's a genius while relying on Kato's mechanical and kung-fu skills, decides to be a superhero, the Green Hornet, and use his father's paper to play up the bad-guy elements. The reporting on the Hornet upsets LA's DA, who's up for reelection, and the city's real crime boss, Chudnofsky. Plus, how long will Kato suffer in silence, when he has all the skill? Competition for the affection of Britt's assistant, Lenore, brings things to a head.
I'm a bit surprised at the vehemence of some of these reviews. I am not a comic book guy. I liked Tim Burton's Batman back in the dawn of time and by and large the rest of the genre I can do without. I only attended Green Hornet because some friends were going, and at first I had it confused with the Green Lantern and was expecting another "gritty/serious" (and cringe-inducing) superhero flick. As a result I was pleasantly surprised to see a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, has a certain level of ironic detachment, and showcases a hilarious villain. If you see a scene where the bad guy has a chance to wipe out the hero but fails because he insisted on reciting his new tag line before delivering the final blow, and you DON'T think that's awesome, then this movie isn't for you.
Of course, this isn't Citizen Kane, either. Seth Rogen is a bit too successful at portraying an obnoxious character. The chemistry between the Hornet and Kato seems forced at first, as is the love triangle later with Lenore. They can come up with all this crazy technology at the drop of a hat but their bug doesn't have wireless communication. The best approach to all of this is to remember this isn't a good movie so much as an entertaining one, and this frees you up to enjoy the fight scenes, one-liners, and the antics of Bloodnofsky.
They hit this movie right on the head. My only disappointment was the ending was over done. The movie was full of good lines, excitement and comedy. I can't see how this movie could have been improved (except like I said earlier the ending is a little over done). Not sure where the mediocre reviews are coming from, my wife even loved this one and she is very picky on action flicks. Seth Rogen's Take on the Roll was great, lost confused millionaire not knowing what he's doing. Kato was awesome, obviously you can't replace Bruce Lee (and lord knows Hollywood has tried) but it doesn't make the new Kato boring. James Franco does a great job in a bit role, to bad there wasn't a bigger part for him. Oh well, I recommend seeing this, go with an open mind and I can't see how you won't enjoy this.

"To me, the two aren't mutually exclusive," said Rogen. "You can have a big action epic with a lot of funny parts." Green Hornet is a big-screen adaptation of the superhero franchise, which was adapted as a popular 1960s television series and was inspired by the original radio program created in the 1930s. Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato, who has incredible martial-arts skills. Rogen, whose film projects to date have been primarily comedic in nature, said that the forthcoming update will evoke other action films that feature an undercurrent of humor. "I've seen the early 'Indiana Jones' movies in theaters, and they kill," Rogen said. "There's laughs throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't feel like a comedy per se. It just feels like something that's trying to solicit reactions from the audience, and we think of movies like 'True Lies' and stuff like that. That's more kind of what we're going for with this." Director Michel Gondry also has said this about the film's tone: "It's an action movie with some comedy in it. The action will be fast and furious and the comedy will come from the dynamic between Kato and Britt Reid." Reportedly, he stepped down to work on a superhero spoof comedy starring Jack Black.
