For unknown reasons, the Earth's ionosphere has weakened dramatically during the course of the last century. All animal and plant species perished decades ago. All that remains is one small group of humans who attempt to resist the hostility and hardness of the external environment from SUMER, the last hive city in the world. A young boy, Hermes, lives alone close to the wall that delimits the city, an area that is highly guarded by the SSW (SUMER Security Watchers). While observing the desert from the roof of a building, Hermes suddenly sees something that looks a lot like a blue feather floating in the air...
Graphically, this has the look and feel of an old video game. I suspect it actually is a game engine rendition. Sumer also suffers from little to no imagination, with the possible exception of the soldiers' helmets: I don't recall having ever seen them anywhere before, and I couldn't possibly forget such ridiculous and inconvenient headgear.
As mediocre as the visuals are, it's the writing that actually takes the biscuit. Not only has this kind of storyline been beaten to death already, this particular take is terribly inefficiently told. For starters, what should be in the film is found instead in the IMDb synopsis. Despite a long - and self-contradictory - introductory exposition. In any case, we still end up in a high tech metropolis with no idea how it manages to function, or what the gates and the guards are guarding the city from since we are told there is absolutely no life outside.
You see, the writer has obviously entered the World Plot-holes Championship, in all categories from Size to Frequency and Obviousness. You'll witness a boy's 10+ metres down jump with Spiderman-approved landing, energy rifles powerful enough to slow down a kid for a couple of seconds, vehicles that crash for no reasons, feathers bigger than the birds they come from, blindingly colourful creatures that watchful watchmen do not notice, and much, much more ! It's up to you to either cringe or laugh.
I am not fan of video games. in fact, it is an universe who I do not know. so, the realism of young Hermes seems, for a novice like me, remarkable. and the idea not bad. but "Sumer" is not reduced at "package".the story has to many holes. the letter of mother, the unrealistic jump of young man, the escape and the mission to discover him, the bird and the oasis who appears almost as a comfortable end.something essential is missing.something who could make this short film real interesting. but, the sketches like this are the virtue to be challenge for the imagination of its public.
