1986. In a rural district of South Korea, two women have been recently raped and murdered. Working on the case are detectives Park Doo-man and Cho Yong-koo. Their efforts are impeded by some sloppy crime scene procedure by the police. Their methods of solving cases are also quite basic, essentially amounting to beating confessions out of suspects. All this leads to nothing and the police chief brings in a more sophisticated and intelligent detective from Seoul, Seo Tae-yoon. With his arrival the methods improve but they still don't have the killer. Then another woman is found murdered and a pattern emerges.
In 1986, in the province of Gyunggi, in South Korea, a second young and beautiful woman is found dead, raped and tied and gagged with her underwear. Detective Park Doo-Man and Detective Cho Yong-koo, two brutal and stupid local detectives without any technique, investigate the murder using brutality and torturing the suspects, without any practical result. The Detective Seo Tae-Yoon from Seoul comes to the country to help the investigations and is convinced that a serial-killer is killing the women. When a third woman is found dead in the same "modus-operandi", the detectives find leads of the assassin.
According to its web page, this movie has received an overall rating of 8.1, and what's more five IMDb staff have ostensibly given it an average rating of 8.3.
Horse poop. IMDb has been hacked. There is NO WAY that 68,996 IMDb users could rate this piece of junk 8.1 (unless they were close relatives of the director, which I doubt).
In fact, it's hard t0 imagine 69 thousand users watching more than 30 minutes of this pic before pitching their DVD in the trash.
The acting is abysmal. The cinematography is awful. The continuity is terrible.

We watch movies to escape reality, Don't we? And very rarely we come across movies that shake you to your core and leaves you in a wreck. What amazes me is that a movie that speaks a language you don't understand and takes place in a country/culture you have very little idea about can connect to you on various levels, move you and disturb you.
Memories of Murder is an ingeniously made crime thriller that keeps you engaged right from the beginning to the very end. It is very hard to find a dull moment in the movie. Be it the writing or the acting or the cinematography or the BGM, this movie is literally flawless. It is crafted with such perfection that it is almost hard to believe you are watching a movie. It felt like you are witnessing these incidents unfold, right before you.
The wide range of emotions, stress, and pain a detective goes through while handling a case is beautifully portrayed by the two lead actors. Kang-ho Song and Sang-kyung Kim, with their incredible acting skills, effortlessly take us through the lives and hardships of detectives. Though both the characters differ from each other in many ways, we are able to relate to them at one point or other. Asians are stereotyped for having small eyes (there are a couple of subtle references in this movie too!) and it must be an irony that almost all the characters in this movie emote flawlessly through their eyes.
The landscape plays an important role in the movie. It sets the tone right from the beginning - Cold, silent, intimidating and vast. The countryside is picturized exquisitely that even though it is subtle at most places, it gives a sense of eeriness wherever it's required and at the same time it kind of comforts you wherever it's needed.
The last few minutes is where the movie peaks and leaves you heart- breaking. You can't help but feel for the detectives who gave their everything to catch the murderer but lost to circumstances. The end scene where the retired detective converses with a girl sums up the entire movie and we feel the exact same way as he feels - frustrated, clueless and unfortunate. As he gazes through the screen, we are left with an empty feeling of not knowing what to do after watching an amazing movie.
It takes enormous skill to pull off such a high-wire act without diminishing the gravity of the situation, but Bong and his first-rate cast are up to the task.
