This is the story of the evolution of the town Centennial, Colorado. It follows the paths of dozens of people who come to the area for many reasons: money, freedom, or crime. It also shows the bigoted treatment of the Native Indians by the advancing U.S. colonists. It is topped off with a murder mystery that takes one hundred years to solve.
The economic and cultural growth of Colorado spanning two centuries from the mid 1700s to the late 1970s.
Obviously quite a few individuals wrote in because I flipped James Michener and James Clavell. Both are authors of large (monumental) historical novels that have been made into highly entertaining mini series.
Michener, aside from Centennial, also wrote South Pacific and Texans.
Clavell wrote the excellent Shogun, Noble House (with Pierce Brosnan), Tai-Pan and the screenplay for The Great Escape, among many other career highlights.
Apart from both having the first name James, there are a lot of similarities between these great writers. Both belonged to the WWII generation and served during war. Clavell became a POW in the Far East, where many of his novels are set. Michener became naval historian and served in, where else, the South Pacific. He wrote "Tales From The South Pacific", which became the basis for the musical South Pacific and married a Japanese wife.
So there.
All this picture needed was John Wayne to be the greatest western ever made.
NBC did this mini-series in when it kept moving the time around. Happily, now with tape, we can see most of the film. The version on tape is not the full production as seen on television. TV Guide also did a story on this film when first seen. I remember its comments well. They did a terrible job of describing the production. Their objections are now humorous.
The acting is wonderful, as is the story.
This was filmed on location in Colorado and the scenery is as grand as the story.
Also, "Potato" Brumbaugh was based on my great, great grandfather.
