In the future, in a polluted post-apocalyptic society called Eurasia after a war against Europe, the planet is devastated by the effect of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. The geneticist Dr. Azuma (Akira Terao) develops a technique called "neo-cell", capable of regenerating the body of human beings, sponsored by an evil corporation. His son Tetsuya Azuma (Yusuke Iseya) dies in the war, but after an accident in the laboratory of Dr. Azuma, Tetsuya revives as the powerful warrior Casshern, while a new breed of mutants called "neo-humans" is generated in the plant. The neo-humans decide to annihilate the humans and raise a new world. Live-action sci-fi movie based on a 1973 Japanese animé of the same name (Shinzo Ningen Casshân). Theme song by Utada Hikaru. Casshern is one of the first live-action films, where actors had to perform in front of a green-screen, and all the stage elements were added afterwards. Therefore, most of the scenes are not real, yet animated with lavish CG. This follows in similar light to Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and the acclaimed Sin City. But Casshern is a film in its own league.

Based upon a 1973 anime series, Casshern's story revolves around a story of an alternate history. After a major war in Asia, the world has been left polluted, and the earth destroyed. However, Dr. Azuma, a geneticist, has found a cure for humankind, in the form of neo-cells, which he believes are able to regenerate human cells. As research continues, a new from of human is born, and they aren't bent on destroying all humans. The only person, who can fight, is Dr. Azuma's recently deceased son, Tetsuya.

From the outset, Casshern tells a convoluted story, of love and hatred, peace and war. Every character has their motives on such issues which really help with the emotional struggle presented. However, as the movie gets a little unbearable at times, it is never gory, nor extremely violent; you can't help but feel sorry for all those innocent people killed from the war. This in turn is a great eye-opener. We are shown sequences of war throughout the movie, and especially the carnage that it brings with it. The problem with Casshern's story is the speed in which some events happen. Certain events seemed that they needed to be fleshed out a little more so we could understand why other characters react to the situations. The film decides to leave out some details, but it's never to the point where you never understand what is happening: the story has a nice flow to it. This is also in thanks to the generally good subtitles, which appear to translate the story fairly accurately.

The more impressive aspect of Casshern is easily the cinematography. Every scene has a solid visual impact, as far as being more stylized then Sin City. The CG animation is not entirely realistic, but that to help with the animation effect the film creates. Casshern is ultimately a blending of live-action with Japanese animation. At times, lights fill the screen, but it's all so perfect all the time. Even the scenes which did not require the special effects are beautiful to watch. It must be noted that the film was not filmed as an action-fest. There's enough story to counter-balance the mayhem.

The action sequences are however, not entirely amazing. They never reach the level of utterly breathtaking that's left for the visuals - but they do a decent job. One can feel the intensity of battle, whether it's high-octane fights of Tetsuya and the robots, or the more realistic war scenes. This is aided with some good acting. Acting is never entirely convincing, but it's never a real problem. You'll be too stunned at attractiveness of the film, and its deep, and real messages it presents. Assisting the action is some blood pumping music, which always gives introduces each encounter. The main theme, Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro, is excellently performed by Utada hikaru.

Casshern will easily go unnoticed in the film industry, which is sad. Its stylized in its own right, never over violent, concerned with real issues which affect us all, and a complete visual feast for the eyes which has the coolness factor written all over it. Speaking ill of Casshern, is only an illustration of ones ignorance for Asian cinema, because ultimately, Casshern is better then most action films that Hollywood produces. This is a great looking film. Easily its the best looking of the three computer generated live action films so far released (The others being The Immortel and Sky Captain). However this film is missing a viable script to make you want to look at the visuals.

The plot has something to do with an army of reborn supermen being battled, occasionally, by a reborn soldier who eventually takes the name Casshern. There is more to the plot but considering how little of it actually made sense I figure I'll keep to the basics.

The action sequences, the few that there are, are absolutely mind bogglingly great. They are the reason that movies exist, taking you some where and showing you something that can only be seen with magic. I love them and the reflect perfectly how comics and animation can be done as live action.

But they are few and far between and there is a good deal of great looking sequences that contain a lot of nonsensical chatter or silence. The plot that they are suppose to be driving could have been workable in different hands and at a reasonable length, but this movie runs almost two and a half hours and is sure to induce a coma in anyone but visual artists.

If you want to see great visuals, see this film, if you want to see a great story look elsewhere.

6 out of 10 (purely because of the visuals) It is also Casshern who chooses to destroy the lightning bolt and return Tetsuya to his home. As to "why": Tetsuya has decided to call himself Casshern. This way, he has become the mutants' new protector. Casshern (the guardian spirit) is no longer needed.

This is just my interpretation. Don't quote me on it, maybe I got it all wrong. 7cb1d79195
