The brutal and notorious crime lord Black Mask is captured by the Batman, but can jail hold him when his criminal organization attempts to break him out? Robin and Batgirl must stop Black Mask's escape on their own while Batman attempts to locate and disarm a weapon of mass destruction.
"The Breakout" is perhaps the best fourth season episode of THE BATMAN since the season opener "A Matter of Family". Black Mask is a serious threat who doesn't play games like most of Batman's foes. The episode doesn't explore his background at all, but that can be remedied in future appearances.
The Batman is deadly serious here--leaving the puns and light-heartedness to Robin & Batgirl. The sidekicks worked together especially well in this show, supporting each other even when they are expressing doubts about their chances of success. This could almost have been an episode of the old BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES.
About time the kids got to show how much they've learned. Unlike "A Dark Knight to Remember" this is a great solo episode for Dick and Barbara. With Bruce out of commission for the majority of the episode, the sidekicks get their day in the sun. They might still have a lot to learn but they definitely show the progress they've made. They have great chemistry together, the action's great, Black Mask is menacing and dangerous, even when he's in prison, and it's just fun to watch. The only way this could be better, is if the tone was darker. They went for a more comedy driven episode, which isn't bad, but I would've liked it if Dick and Barbara had to fight for their lives towards the end more.
