The story takes place in 1999, the Year of Destiny, and the beginning of the end of the world. The future of the universe rests on one young man, Kamui Shiro, who must destroy either the Dragons of Earth or the Dragons of Heaven - two opposing armies. He alone must decide whether humanity should be destroyed to create a purified universe, or whether it should be protected to preserve civilization. Two oracles, the sisters Hinoto and Kanoe foresee the coming of the Dragons and predict opposite outcomes. Each sister gathers strength and ammunition to insure her own vision for the future. However, neither sister realizes that there is one man who has an even greater power than the Dragons, and that ultimately he will determine the fate of the earth. Which sister will prevail and how does Kamui fit into their struggle? The answer to this question will forever affect humanity.
First of all, let me preface this by saying that I am a big time fan of anime. I spent way too much money and way too much time watching way too many videos, and yet I still love it.
That said, this film is on the short list of anime films I wouldn't bother watching again. The plot is utterly muddled and a complete rush job, as you'd expect from cramming a 22 volume manga (comic) series into one movie. I had no idea what was going on, I had no interest in the characters, the fight scenes were cool occasionally, but that didn't sustain my interest. To the film's credit, it did _look_ nice, and the animation is as impressive as any I've seen in anime. But nice visuals doesn't save a confusing story.
Don't get me wrong- I like anime that has depth and requires a bit of effort on the part of the viewers. But this is a challenge that's just beyond worth taking. If you want to see a work that's complex, "deep", visually arresting, _and_ maintains a viewer's interest, ignore this and head for Evangelion or Ghost in the Shell.
In the year 1999 protagonist Kamui Shirou is sent back to Tokyo to fulfil his destiny. It is potentially the end of the world as two groups; The Dragons of Heaven and Dragons of Earth do battle; the former fighting to protect humanity, the latter fighting to cleanse the planet of humanity. Kamui must decide which side he is to fight for. It won't be easy and many of those he cares about will be killed along the way
and to make matters even harder whichever side he chooses to fight for his friend Fuma is destined to fight on the other side.
This anime film quickly throws us into the action and that action barely stops until the end
and while the action looks great not enough time is given to introducing the characters. We are told that certain structures in Tokyo somehow protect the Earth and that a battle to protect them is destined to take place but we are hardly told why. The 'Dragons' are people with supernatural powers and their battles lead to widespread destruction which is pretty impressive. The character designs are a little dated in style but that doesn't detract from the film; they are distinctive enough and suit the style of the story. I've neither read the manga nor watched the later series so can't say how this compares but overall I'd say it is okay if you want plenty of action
just don't expect 'cartoon violence' this is pretty bloody and certainly not one for younger viewers.
