The South Atlantic during World War 2. The US destroyer USS Haynes spots and engages a German U-boat. The U-boat is commanded by Captain Von Stolberg (played by Curd Jurgens), a wily veteran U-boat commander. The captain of the Haynes is Lt Commander Murrell (Robert Mitchum), a Naval Reserve officer who was previously in the merchant marine. Because of this background, some of his crew doubt his abilities. he soon proves them wrong and a battle of wits ensues between the two adversaries.
During World War II, the USS Haynes, an American destroyer escort discovers a German U-boat in the South Atlantic. A deadly duel between the two ships ensues, and Captain Murrell must draw upon all his experience to defeat the equally experienced German commander.
I do not usually care for war movies, however, this one is very good with little bloodshed and a lot of what probably went on in a lot of the war theatres of WWII. It showed strategy, boredom, personal feelings about war in general and this war in particular. I found it interesting that in all of the movies starring Curt Jurgens, he is against war, even in "The Spy Who Loved Me". Then I found out that he had been a dissident in Germany and ended up in a concentration camp for the duration of the war. This showed in this movie. Between Curt Jurgens and Robert Mitchum this was a very good war movie and showed how war was perceived by the common man. The men participated in similar activities during the silent period when both vessels went silent to wait out each other out. This movie rarely makes the top list of war movies and I cannot figure out why. I suppose a war movie just isn't interesting if it doesn't show a lot of blood and gore. Everyone worked together at the end in the common rescue of survivors from both vessels. It is one of my favorite war movies along with "The Miracle of the White Stallions" which also takes place during WWII.
This is a very unusual movie, the kind that could only have been made during peacetime. It's a World War 2 engagement between an American destroyer and a Nazi sub, but resembles more a chess game between two equally matched rivals.
Robert Mitchum as the American captain and Curt Jurgens as the Nazi commander, despite their adversarial situation, almost show mutual respect and admiration for each other's military skills. As the chess game plays out, with the two matching each other move for move, you are simultaneously shown the crews of the two vessels, and learn about several individuals. Comparisons of how sailors on each side are reacting to the situation soon make the message clear: there aren't too many differences between the crews at all. This effort to understand the emotions and intents of a bitter enemy was unique, considering the opinion of the Nazis.
Well acted, and well scripted. This is an involving story, with an intelligent, even optimistic approach. There's no shortage of action, but it is presented in the context of the battle of wits going on, rather than to focus on the explosions and destruction. Several supporting roles are done well, too many to list.
The resolution of the battle is played out brilliantly. Although one might suspect the outcome, the manner at which the enemies finally encounter one another face to face is remarkably well done. If the story looks familiar, you may have seen an excellent adaptation in an early Star Trek episode. The movie was topical in the '50's when it was first made, the '60's when Star Trek utilized it, and it still has something to say today.
Das Boot comes from a completely different source material than The Enemy Below. However, it should be noted that both films have very similar scenes:
*A sailor goes crazy and has to be restrained.
*One of the officers is an ardent Nazi while the Captain is openly against Hitler.
