A barbarian woman with a miraculous healing staff gains the help of a group of to-be heroes as an army of dragons invades the land.
After five years apart, searching the world of Krynn for proof of the existence of the true gods, a group of adventurers find their proof in the form of a barbarian woman carrying a miraculous blue crystal staff. Soon they are thrust into war as an army of dragons overtakes their homeland.
I was 16 when this project was announced, and waited over eight years to see it out. I am no fan-boy. I paid my $6.75 to see the D&D movie and swore that there was more anachronisms to the game than any semblance of plot, then I played 3rd edition and realized the movie was a commercial.
They had scammed their fans.
When this was said to come to the theaters, I got all happy. Then I started to see the final product coming together and got worried, then I saw the movie: All of the essential visual bits are in there, but the animation resembles something that would be on Cartoon Network, not very high quality. Not counting the fact that there are some actors that are definitely rooted in the Anime style of screaming every ten seconds.
But when you watch a movie like this, it's for the story, and everything in there is correct. Raistlin's withered speech and dark humor, Riverwind's stoicism and fierce determination, Sturm's incredible strength of courage and honor, Tanis' leadership constantly straining and putting his grace in front of his anger.
Although it makes itself known as a good story, and a geek-cult will form, I will wait and see the next movie before I start drinking the foul-smelling tea.
With a $20 million budget, Dragonlance fans have been handed a horribly animated short 'epic' that has only one saving grace, and that is the voice work.
You've seen the trailer. Yes, the animation is substandard, no better than that of 1980's cartoon's such as Thundercats and Masters Of The Universe. Except that those TV shows didn't have a $20m budget.
The film is riddled with errors and grade B cg animation. What could have been a promising start of a new franchise has been delivered with staggering incompetent that has to be seen to be believed.
The Dungeons And Dragons licence seems to be cursed. First the atrocious 2000 film by Courtney Solomon, and now this piece of animated excrement. Only the standout 2005 film by Gerry Lively managed to capture what millions of readers and gamers enjoyed.
Do not rent or buy this film. It is simply awful.
