An elite DEA team raids the safe house of a drug cartel and hide $10 million in the plumbing. When they go back to retrieve the money it is not there. The team is under investigation for the missing $10 million. Then after a couple months the investigation is lifted. The team trains together again and then celebrates at a strip club. Then one of the team is murdered. He wakes up in his RV on railroad tracks. Then a second team member is nailed to the ceiling. The third team member is gunned down at his remote cabin. There is a female City of Atlanta investigator in charge of the murders. After investigating the cartel angle, the twisted truth comes to light.
A DEA special ops unit becomes involved in a large scale bust involving tens of millions of dollars. The bust becomes interesting when the group decides to take 10 million dollars for their own use. Things go sour when the money which was hidden turns out to be missing. The group eventually recovers from an internal investigation with another chance to salvage their reputation. But which organized drug group would forget about 10 million dollars? The bigger mystery is where did that money go?
Arnold Schwarzeneggar plays a character called 'John' of all surprises and he is the captain of a very heavy set, sweaty group of profane cops who are in the middle of a drug bust, and decide to steal 10 million of the cartels dollars.
When they go back to get their loot, it's already been taken, and then the whole team are put under investigation regarding the lost swag.
Soon the case is thrown out of the window and the team are back together, but it isn't long before the team are being picked off one by one.
Is it the cartel, or is it one of their team?
Or could it be Schwarzneggars hair stylist?.......
First off, it's not your typical Arnie fodder. It's written by Ayer, who gave us Training Day and End Of Watch, so it's got a lot of realism to it, and when you say the word realism in relation to an Arnie film, it's very rare.
Out of all the movies he's made since his comeback of sorts, this was the one I wasn't really bothered about, a loose remake of Ten Little Indians, and a cast who haven't really done much after having an average performance in a big movie (Hello Sam Worthington).
And the film is a blast from beginning to end. It's not an action film like you would expect, but it's more of a mystery, and although the action is pretty sparse, it's brutal and in your face, especially for a 15 certificate.
The cast are great together, and are the predictable rag tag team of hard men. Drinking, swearing, falling out, making up, a real bro-mance, and this is the downside to the film, the predictability of the main characters, these personality traits are in every film about the police these days, and it gets a little boring for the viewer.
It wouldn't hurt for the writers to be a little different once in a while.
Worthington has never been better, in his previous movies, he let the effects do the work for him, here, he shows he's got a talent of some sort.
Arnie is Arnie, and if your a fan, you can forgive his lack of range, it's as if his hair is showing his mood, as his back story is very, very dark.
Throw in a few red herrings, and you have a decent little thriller. It's not going to win Arnie any new fans, but for dedicated fans of the man, it'll do nicely.
It is good to keep expectations low, but even with higher expectations, I still enjoyed the movie. Arnold is the closest he is to acting, and it is believable. Here, we see Arnold playing an aging anti-hero riddled with grief of the loss of family and having to prevent the dismantling of his team. I think the role suited him perfectly. He seemed frail but in control. His inexpressive face also conceals his true feelings. In fact, when a homicide detective said she could not read him, this was a hint of what was going to come. Apart from Arnold, the supporting casts did excellent jobs. Sam Worthington was great as the sentimental member of the group. Olivia Williams also has great screen presence in the movie. Mirreille Enos was also great to watch. However, it is too bad other supporting casts such as Terence Howard and Harold Perrineau are under-used. I think the strongest point of the movie is in the direction. David Ayer is able to get the best performance from every character. Besides that, the movie has a lot twists that will keep you guessing to the end. Action is also even spread throughout the movie, making the movie a fulsome entertainment.
Director David Ayer is using the blood and guts to make a point about the insane violence committed by drug cartels, yes, but the bloodshed is unrelenting and, ultimately, exhausting.
