A soldier trained from birth is deemed obsolete and dumped on a waste planet where he is reluctantly taken in by a community of defenseless, stranded wayfarers.
In a futuristic society, some people are selected at birth to become soldiers, and trained in such a manner that they become inhuman killing machines. One of the most succesfull and older of these soldiers (Russell) is pitted against a new breed of soldiers, and after the confrontation is believed to be dead. His body is left behind in a semi-abandoned colonial planet, where everything is peaceful, and he is taught about the other aspects of life. But eventually he has to fight the new breed of soldiers again, this time to defend his new home...
This movie is OK. It wasn't bad, the story was coherent, the plot was clear and thought-provoking, the action was exciting enough, the fight scenes were credible, and Kurt Russell and Jason Scott Lee acted well. It's not a must-see like Terminator 2. This is the kind of movie you'd just like to sit back, enjoy and finish.
The theme is not original. It's a combination of Universal Soldier 2 (the original vs. the improved version), Gattaca (power of the human spirit), Terminator 2 (killing machine learning to care) and a classic Kung Fu movie (hero gets beaten intially). It's the total concept from this combination and the development of the storyline that gives it a unique appeal -- the inhuman way Todd and his fellow soldiers were raised and trained, their battles, Todd's defeat in the hands of Kane, the settler's rescue of Todd, his life with them and of course, his defense of the settlement and eventual revenge on the bad guys.
Kurt Russell acts well as a soldier devoid of emotion. Most of the time it's just his eyes doing the acting. He speaks volumes with that blank stare of his. During the sparse moments he's actually allowed to speak, he gives the voice a blind, subservient, yet non-robotic quality.
Plus of course the final confrontation between Todd and Kane features a pleasant twist to an expected outcome.
On the down side, the effects are run-of-the-mill B-movie type ones. But since it's not the main focus of the story, it's acceptable, unlike action spectaculars by bigger action stars which tend to lose focus because of the effects and gadgetry.
The Germany:16 version is missing several of the brutal action scenes, like the combat scene at the chains is reduced to four people climbing up the chain, and after a short braw Todd falls on his two dead comrades. Then Cain climbes down, and his eye is injured. There similar parts missing in the combat at the end of the film.
Soldier is a violent science fiction action film starring Kurt Russell as Sargeant Todd, an cold hardened space marine, whom was chosen at birth to be a soldier, whom is dumped and left to die on Arcadia 234, a garbage planet, when he is knocked unconscious in a fight with Caine 607 (Jason Scott Lee), a genetically engineered new breed of soldier. On the planet, Todd is befriend and nursed back to health by the survivors of a crashed spaceship, that have set up a colony on the planet and Todd struggles to adjust to living a normal life, due to his conditioning and training as a soldier. But, when Colonel Meckham (Jason Issacs), Caine 607 and the genetic engineered soldier's commanding officer orders Caine 607 and the genetic engineered soldiers to eliminate the crash survivors, as part of an training routine. Todd uses his combat skills and decides to protect the crash survivors and takes on the genetic engineered soldiers in a one man war. As an aside, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson has stated that as far as he is concerned, his film Soldier is a 'sidequel' to Blade Runner, as it occurs in the same fictional milieu as Scott's film, although it is not actually a follow-up (Soldier was co-scripted by Blade Runner screenwriter David Peoples).
