What I’m Reading: Milk and Honey

I don’t read much poetry, but every time I do, I wish I read it more often. It is such an intriguing form of expression to me. As many of us do in our teens, I dabbled in it inexpertly without any real talent for or grasp of the medium. I think this is part of why I am filled with such complete awe I read the work of a poet who practice their craft with utter mastery. Rupi Kaur does exactly that. Her brilliance feels limitless.

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur is a perfect example of this. Her poems are simple, sometimes lyrical. Some are just a handful of words while others are a few paragraphs, but each of them deftly conveys such deeply true sentiments and experiences. Seeing them written out on a page often takes my breath away, as though some of my most personal thoughts and emotions are laid bare. Some of the poems are presented unadorned while others are accompanied by her simple yet stunning and perfectly paired line drawings.

The book itself is like a small collection of treasures and each poem feels like a special secret treat. Something to turn over in your mind as often as you like, marveling at its evocative construction as well as its meaning to you and to others.
