It takes time to become skilled in the craft of woodworking. The nice thing about working up to this expert craftsman level is you'll be able to create some really nice furniture for you and your family to enjoy. Imagine building a custom coffee table or grandfather clock and having it sit in your living space. It will be a topic of conversation whenever you have friends come over to visit. They'll ask: How can you create it? How long can it take to finish the project? What type of tools did you use? Just how on earth did you make such a beautiful piece of furniture? As you discuss your work, a feeling of pride will come over you and do not be surprised if your friends ask you to make one for them too!

If you're thinking you are just too old or too young for woodworking, then think again! You are never too old or too young for such a fun hobby and it is perfect for beginners!

Where to Begin in Woodworking?

Start with a concept in mind of what you want to build and then get a excellent woodworking project plan that is geared toward beginners. There are many small woodworking projects for novices available for purchase from online woodworking retailers. A few woodworking program suggestions to get you thinking are: a jewelry box, a music box, a clock, a bird house, a chessboard or checkerboard, a rocking horse for a kid just to mention a couple. Obviously you can begin with as grand a woodworking plan as you pick. However, the odds are if you start out using a little woodworking job initially, you will have a better prospect of completing the project.

Your woodworking project plan must include some lists! Lists of: woodworking equipment, the amount and type of wood required, and the required hand tools and power tools to finish the undertaking. Note: A word of warning about purchasing woodworking tools. Only buy what you need to finish your immediate or upcoming endeavor. This is important especially if you are a beginner and just beginning. Tools aren't affordable. The beginner needs good woodworking tools, but you can easily break the bank buying great deal of tools you might not use all that often. When you do buy gear, buy quality. Do a bit of research and compare goods. Buy the best that you could afford at the moment.

This is my Beginners List of Woodworking Hand Tools:

A claw hammer, wood chisel set, a hand saw, a miter box using a saw (for cutting angles), a coping saw, complete punches, flat and straight tip screwdrivers, a rubber mallet (for tapping bits together while not damaging the wood), woodworking straps, a wood vise, a bench plane, a rasp, a tape measure, a 12" steel rule, a 6" steel square, and do not overlook the wood glue and a brush to spread the wood adhesive! Obviously you'll require a dry area to work and may require a set of saw horses to work on.

Circular saw, a jig saw, a table saw, a belt sander (to remove larger amounts of substance and level out larger surfaces), an orbital end sander, a 3/8" electric drill, a 12v or 18v cordless drill.

Here is my Beginners List of Woodworking Safety Equipment:

We can go on and off with listing more woodworking hand tools and more woodworking power tools here, but the idea is to purchase the essential hand and power tools which novices will need. You can always add to your toolbox as you gain experience!

You now have a fantastic new hobby in woodworking, so you have purchased your woodworking project plan and you are really excited to begin using your new woodworking tools, but how? Your woodworking project plan must provide you step by step directions and techniques to finish your project. But if you are unsure about what to do there is help available! There are several places that starting woodworkers can find out about the woodworking craft. First, subscribe to one of those several woodworking magazines available. Each month the writers in woodworking magazines do a story on the best way best to increase your woodworking craft. When it is showing you how to apply an end to a finished project, or how to make a mortise and tenon joint, something new can be heard each month. Next, is purchasing educational DVD's like the ones made by Fine Woodworking Magazine. Instructional Woodworking DVD's cover subjects such as: mastering your table saw, how to work with a router, how to turn wood jobs, turning wooden bowls, and wood finishing basics.
