When playing the jew's harp, it is resonances that produce the sound: The jew's harp reed vibrates before the mouth. It excites vibrations of the air column enclosed in the cavities of mouth, throat and chest. Depending on the shape of the cavities the vibrating air column enhances certain tones of the natural harmonic row of the jew's harp. This is shown in figure 2 and 3: Played normally with contact to the mouth (yellow curve, red curve) the jew's harp has the same tones as played without contact to the mouth (green curve, grey curve) - the peaks of both curves are at the same frequencies. But the yellow and red peaks are higher than the green and grey ones, that is, the sound is amplified by resonance. Certain frequency regions are especially amplified by resonance. They are called formants. Thus, the resonances of the mouth cavity are a filter that amplifies or reduces the volume of the jew's harp reed at certain frequencies - just like an equalizer that is a filter for audio signals.
Between the 17th and 19th centuries, jaw harp production flourished in Austria. In 1818, the small village of Molln, Upper Austria, had 34 jaw harp producers. During the reign of Maria Theresa, jaw harps were forbidden and then tended to be replaced by harmonicas: a unique tradition was in danger of being forgotten. But three producers at Molln and about a dozen Austrian musicians are endeavouring to preserve this endangered species. The mission of the LOOPING jaw harp orchestra is to expand the domain of jaw harps by exporting them to other than their traditional genres of traditional folk and world music.
From the beginning Krauka was a band inspired by the Viking-age instruments and sagas, playing acoustically for about 100 persons. Later they have taken part in big festivals, for instance: in 2000 at a festival in Greenland, celebrating the 1000th year of Leif the Lucky's finding Vinland; and in 2001 at a Viking festival on the Faroe Islands. The same year they had their first school concert tour in Denmark and played in different Viking festivals in DK. In 2002 they played at a festival at Fjorukrain, outside Reykjavik in Iceland and at different locations in Iceland. This year they have also made two school-concert tours.
That commission has been followed by many others from ensembles and institutions in America and Europe, including orchestras like the Boston Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic; Golijov also teaches at the Boston Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center. Recent works include an opera about Federico Garcнa Lorca entitled Ainadamar, with a libretto by David Henry Hwang, which this summer will be presented at the Santa Fe Opera in a production by Peter Sellars. He has also composed a work commissioned by the BBC to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

I was born in Hungary though so I cannot help but be Hungarian, I live here and breathe here so everything I do has something to do with my origins.
