Find Out the Truth and Buy the Best Cat Food For Kitty and For You

from web site

With few exceptions, the best cat food to buy is commercially packaged and preferable to homemade food, which is inconvenient to prepare and may not provide adequate nutrition. Should you choose to prepare your cats food on your own, or should a medical condition require home cooking, make sure your veterinarian provides you with a recipe for a nutritionally complete and balanced feline diet.

In general if you stick with nationally marketed and recognized brands and steer clear of generic products, the food you purchase for your cat should be fine. Generic brands, whose formulas are inconsistent, they lack essential ingredients and cause serious nutritional deficits and can be difficult for your cats to digest. The superiority of premium brands, such as those available at pet stores, pet food outlets, and veterinary offices, is under debate among veterinary nutritionists.

An advantage of premium brands is that they’re always made following the same recipe, whereas ingredients in some of the less expensive brands may change based on cost. Some cats gastrointestinal tracts are sensitive to change. Also the premium foods are more efficiently digested, producing less waste than some generic in supermarket brands, and are generally more palatable.

If you need to change your cat’s diet for any reason, try to do so over the course of a week or so. Sudden changes in food can get a cat diarrhea. To introduce a new food, combine the new food in the old, then gradually decrease the amount of the old in proportion to the new.

A good quality canned cat food is nutritionally equal to a good quality dry or semi moist one, but such factors as your cat’s age, finickyness, and tendency to obesity and dental problems can make one type of food more suitable.

Dry foods are relatively inexpensive and can be left out for the cat to eat at will (If you are leaving dry food out all day, be sure it’s fresh and in a thoroughly cleaned bowl.). Cats fed dry foods tend to have less plaque and tartar buildup on their teeth than cats fed canned food, probably because dry food is more abrasive. Contrary to a common perception, there is no evidence that any of today’s high-quality dry foods contributes to urinary tract disease, or any other recognize health problems. However dry diets may be less palatable to some cats. If your cat is underweight, or if he is sick and has a reduced appetite, a canned diet may be the better option.

Canned foods are much more expensive than dry foods, especially considering that they are about 75% water. Because they spoil quickly, canned foods cannot be left out all day. Refrigerate any unused portion of the can (If your cat refuses to eat food straight from the refrigerator, let the food warm to room temperature.). Canned foods are very palatable, which may be a problem if your cat is prone to obesity. But palatability is an advantage if your cat is sick and has a reduced appetite. You may need to experiment with different brands, but often the ones that people find smelliest and most offensive are the ones cats prefer.
