Raised Toilet Seat

What is a raised toilet seat?

A raised toilet seat or a toilet seat riser fall under the category of toilet aids as they allow an elderly user or a user with disabilities to undertake toilet-related activities without the need of assistance.

A raised toilet seat increases the height of a standard bowl, therefore, allowing the user to travel a lesser distance in order to get on and off a toilet.

This is quite helpful for disabled and elderly users who have mobility issues.

A raised toilet seat can simply be placed over an existing seat or attached to the toilet bowl using various locking mechanisms.

What are the different types of raised toilet seat?

The different types of toilet seats can be classified based on the following characteristics:

  • Material Used: There are generally two types of construction material used to produce raised toilet seats i.e. plastic and rubber. The latter being an option for users who are susceptible to pressure sores.
  • Elevation Levels: Expect to find options between 1 inch to 5 inches of elevation.
  • Locking Mechanisms: There are 3 different options available; portable or non-locking, locking with clamps and locking with bolts. The non-locking seats are good as a portable option for users who are travelling or want to use the seat outside of their home. In terms of locked options, clamps tend to be easier to fix and remove and are ideal for toilets used by multiple users and finally the bolt-in option is a permanent one.
  • Cover & Support Arms: For maintaining better hygiene levels, you can get raised toilet seats that can be closed using a lid, just like a standard toilet seat. And another option is a raised toilet seat that comes complete with built-in support arms, these are a good option for users who need extra support to get on and a toilet seat.

When should you consider using a raised toilet seat?

Generally speaking, raised toilet seats are used in the following situations:

  • If the user has weak leg muscles and/or knee problems.
  • If the user has recently undergone surgery e.g. hip replacement or a knee replacement.
  • If the user has any other medically diagnosed condition that affects their ability to support their own body weight.

It is best you talk to an occupational therapist, home modifications consultant or your doctor for advice on whether raised toilet seats are right for you.

  • The elevation level that is right for the user.
