WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 -Babies born to mothers who were given anesthetics during delivery are much more apt to suffer physical and mental impairment than had been be lieved, according to a new Federal study of obstetric medication. The study was made public today.

Dr. Broman conducted the research with another psychologist, Dr. Yvonne Brackbill, at the University of Florida.

The drugs under study included six intended to induce drowsiness and relaxat ion at the onset of labor, such as Demerol and Seconal, and inhaled anesthetics, such as nitrous oxide, as well as injected anesthetics of the procaine chemical family.

The infants were given four types of tests at 4, 8 and 12 months after birth that were designed to measure their mental alertness, reflex actions and ability to perform such obvious movements as sitting up and re:tching for a toy.

Of 148 possible measurements made during these tests, inhaled anesthetics were found to have shown “significant associations with adverse outcomes” in 41 percent of the tests. By contrast, Seconal was found to be implicated in 14 percent arinemoral in 2 percent.
