MANILA, Philippines —Manila broke ground on Tuesday for the construction of a field hospital that would treat COVID-19 patients with mild and moderate symptoms.
The field hospital, which will be built at Rizal Park, will have a 336 bed capacity, the city public information office said.
“We have some way of [heeding] the call of the national government to unclog our hospital capacity and decrease the number of patients who die in tents or at parking spaces,” Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said.
The P154-million hospital is expected to be completed within two months, he said. Around 150 health workers will be in charge of monitoring COVID-19 patients.
As of Tuesday, the Manila health department recorded 3,715 active cases in the city.
