Signal Hill was incorporated on April 22, 1924, roughly three years after oil was found there. Since the 2010 census, the city population was 11,016. Etymology [edit] Signal Hill was originally referred to as Los Cerritos ("little hill"), but got its present name when it became the signal point of the Coast Study in 1889.
Since of this height, it was utilized by the regional Tongva Indians for signal fires that could be seen throughout the surrounding location and level to Catalina Island, 26 miles (42 km) away. After the Spanish claimed ("Upper California," or what is now the state of California), Signal Hill ultimately entered into the first large rancho grant to be allocated under Spanish guideline in Alta California.
Between 1913 and 1923 an early California film studio, Balboa Amusement Making Company (also known as Balboa Studios), was located in Long Beach and used 11 acres (45,000 m2) on Signal Hill for outdoor areas. Buster Keaton and Fatty Arbuckle were 2 of the Balboa Studios actors who had actually films shot on Signal Hill.
