Sleep is an American heavy metal band from San Jose, California. The band made critical and record label attention early in its profession. Critic Eduardo Rivadavia explains them as "possibly the supreme stoner rock band" and notes they applied a strong influence on metal in the 1990s. However, dispute with its record business added to Sleep's separation by the end of the decade.
In 2018, Sleep launched their return album,, on Third Male Records, to important recognition. History [edit] Early years [edit] Sleep progressed in the early 1990s from the band Asbestosdeath, which was developed by vocalist/bassist Al Cisneros, drummer Chris Hakius, and guitarist Tom Choi. Asbestosdeath broadened to a quartet with the intro of Matt Pike on guitar, and taped 2 songs - "Dejection" for Profane Presence and the self-released "Dirty".
Asbestosdeath hired Justin Marler as replacement and the band embraced the new name, Sleep. Recording age [edit] Their debut album was launched in 1991. Frequently compared to bands like Saint Vitus, Sleep soon acquired a devoted fanbase within the developing doom metal scene. Marler stopped the band soon after to take up life as a monk, leaving the band as a power trio for the recording of their EP, which was released formally by Off the Disk Records in 1991.
Recorded at Razors Edge studios in San Francisco, with Billy Anderson as engineer, the tape showcased Sleep's love of all things retro, from the blatant Black Sabbath/Blue Cheer influences, to their fixation with 1970's-design tube amplification. Check Here For More signed the band and launched the tape exactly as it was gotten.
The album's release was followed by a potentially financially rewarding offer from London Records, and Sleep signed with them. Around this time, Earache launched its first Black Sabbath tribute album, and Sleep contributed a cover of "Snowblind". Under their new contract, Sleep began work on their third album,, in 1995.
London Records stated the album unmarketable and declined to launch it. They had it remixed, cut up into areas by David Sardy, which resulted in a deadlock with the band, Sleep being dissatisfied with the outcome. Frustrated and normally dissatisfied with the situation, the members of Sleep chose to dissolve.
