essay

The assassination of Abraham Lincoln is commemorated each year with a Lincoln Essay. This lengthy essay contains historical information on the day Lincoln was shot by Robert Lee. This book contains many important information about Lincoln's life, the background of the conspiracies behind his assassination, the secret letters that were written to remove him from office, the aftermath of his death, and biographical sketches of the people involved in his murder. The essay ends with an assessment of the Lincoln legacy.

I strongly oppose the glorification of Lincoln as a historical figure. His presidency was tarnished by the fact that many leading figures in his administration, including himself and some of his sons, were guilty of conspiring against the Union and its leader, General George Lee. To put the man who led the charge of the Civil War in a museum is an dishonor to the sacrifice he made for his country. I also deplore the way Americans commemorate the tragic event of Lincoln's murder by displaying the body and cadaver of him during a memorial service.

The most widely publicized Lincoln essay is entitled "The Day Lincoln Died." This essay is undoubtedly the best-known commemoration of the most tragic event in our history. Numerous Lincoln scholars compare the presidency of Lincoln to the European model of Machiavellian leadership, saying that Lincoln was not a bad man, but merely a tragic victim of circumstances surrounding his death. According to this view, Lincoln was assassinated by a group of Confederate sympathizers bent on destroying the Union cause and toppling the federal government. atlas shrugged essay contest disagree.

After the Abraham Lincoln assassination, American slavery was forever. The nation could no longer tolerate the institution of slavery. A fierce trial of those responsible for his death happened in 18 53 with the passage of the Compromise bill. Although many Northerners, including Lincoln, opposed the inclusion of blacks in slavery, it was the deep-seated racism of the American countryside that blocked the passage of the bill. Slaves in the North were not only threatened with extermination, but given over to brutal masters.

To this day, many people are unfamiliar with Abraham Lincoln's slave-abolitionist beliefs or his role in the creation of the slave trade. His place in the hierarchy of the white race, as well as his association with the abolitionist movement, has been widely misrepresented. While his participation in the institution of slavery is highly debated, Lincoln's speech at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, against slavery is commonly regarded as his defining moment. As a result, any analysis of his political ideas and writings must necessarily take into consideration the impact of this speech, since it lays the basis for the later development of the civil rights movement. For harvard supplemental essays 2021 planning to write an essay about Abraham Lincoln, an understanding of this speech is critical to learning his most important ideas and the direction in which he went.

In this Students' Lincoln Essay, author Jennifer D. Foer is equipped with research materials and analysis to present this vital event in the life of the United States president. She begins by outlining Lincoln's life and examining his relationship with the North and the South. Then she turns to the issues surrounding the Civil War, analyzing how Lincoln led his country through these tumultuous times. Finally, she unpacks Abraham Lincoln's role as a president, reviewing four of his major addresses.

This Lincoln essay reads like a short book in itself, as it covers four important volumes. The four volumes include; First Address to Congress, Second Memorial and Autobiography, Appearance of Your Father, Final State of Illinois, and A Narrative of Life among the People of that State. The author provides an engaging introduction into Abraham Lincoln and his key moments in office, as well as an insightful look at the complicated times in which he served. Jennifer Foer provides thorough detail and accurate scholarship in this Lincoln-centered essay.

Though Jennifer Foer does a good job of presenting her history, I do not see the detailed account as including any primary source documents. The author seems to leave out many important sources that would support her overall argument, such as diaries or letters that would show Abraham Lincoln's personal interactions with many people during this tumultuous time. Additionally, as the focus is on the historical accounts surrounding the death of the president, many people are left out of the historical account. However, as a historical professor, I can say that Jennifer Foer has done a thorough job of dissecting Abraham Lincoln's time as president, yet she leaves out many important people and events in her account. Her overall scholarship is impressive, but she needs to better describe how these events and those she leaves out affect our understanding of Abraham Lincoln.
