The Monster by Walter Dean Myers Essay Questions

When I read "monster by Walter Dean Myers" today, I was disappointed. It seemed that this was more of a review of a different book. I'm not a huge fan of the Myers series of books, but this one had a few things that kept me reading though. The main character in this one had a monster that reminded me of Dr Seuss and there were a number of questions about writing style that kept me interested. My main focus for this paper was the assignment questions at the end, and how to answer them.

While this book is a quick read and doesn't cover all the bases of essay assignments, it does have some very good questions and essay examples that will get you started on your writing career. I also liked the style of writing and felt that the format did a nice job of presenting the ideas clearly. Unfortunately, this didn't leave me with much confidence in what the writer had to say about being a writer. I certainly would not call myself a competent writer, but I think I did do okay.

So, let's get into some of the essay questions and examples. You are expected to read and understand the assignment and complete all the required reading before submitting your essay. In this book, the professor starts off by reading an essay by Myers about the monster. Myers describes the creature as having the face of a dog, the tail of a donkey, and the body of a whale. Myers goes on to describe the characteristics of this monster and then lists his reasons for writing this essay.

Now, as I read this essay, it started to feel like I was sitting in front of a very large classroom and the professor was explaining to everyone in his class the details of a typical assignment. This didn't make me feel very comfortable and that is why I decided not to grade it. Then, I noticed that there were other students in the class who seemed to be familiar with the monster theory. So, I looked over and saw Richard intending to do the same thing.

The professor had asked all of the students to write a essay about one word that described the monster. So, as Richard wrote his essay, I copied some of my essay wording from his work, word for word. Richard's monster was named Phyllis and she explained that she was a shy, pale girl who loved to paint. She was also good at creating picture frames, playing musical instruments, and even created a book. She wrote her essay about how beautiful Phyllis was, so it is not surprising that I also included that detail here.

Phyllis was actually a very shy creature who enjoyed painting and loved music. I liked the way she described herself in her writing and wanted to include her. Unfortunately, her shyness did not allow her to voice her opinions out loud and she was unable to write monster like thoughts. My other essay question for Richard was "What made you choose to write about monster stories?" As a child, I would get nightmares about monsters, and that was something that made me enjoy reading. In fact, when I finished reading one of my favorite horror novels, I began to imagine that I was living in the same situation as the monster.

Richard answered his essay question correctly. He accomplished two things very effectively; he made the professor happy and he provided an example or way for all of us to express ourselves creatively through writing. We cannot all be monsters, and even if we cannot all write terrifying fiction, we can all get inside our monster's head and create a world that we call ours. Richard Dean Myers is a great author and a wonderful teacher. I look forward to more from him.
