The Online Distributed Learning Group (ODL) met at the American Enterprise Institute Annual Meeting in Washington DC on February 12, 2018. They discussed the future of open-source computing. Dr. Alexander J. Stewart was Senior Vice President of The Linux Foundation. He was joined by Dr. Lawrence C. Miller (Associate Editor-In-Chief of The New York Times) and Professor Thomas P. Altena (Director of the Computer Science department at The University of California, San Diego). The group also included John Grace, President, Cisco Systems, Todd Ditchendorf and Dr. Nicholas Negroponte. The ODL met to discuss new developments in the industry, including the inclusion of Windows Mobile Compact OS into open source Java, the release Linux kernel 4.2 and the upcoming merger Open Source development tools like Open Office and Gnu Image Manipulation into one, more accessible, open-source software package called Opensource. They also reviewed how companies can benefit from investing in the ODL platform, from initial start-up to long-term maintenance. We'll be looking at some highlights from the ODL discussion in this article.
