The term tui-na (also known as pronounced twee-naw) refers to a wide array of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment techniques, including bodywork and therapeutic manipulation. Tui Na is traditionally used to treat physical and emotional discomfort, such as restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, depression and anger. It can also be used for the diagnosis and management of other ailments like constipation, asthma, arthritis and fatigue, headache pain, menstrual pains or sports injuries, and many others. Tui Na is not used for pleasure or leisure but rather as part of the diagnosis process for specific diseases.

Although the benefits of Tui Na may not be fully understood in Western medical research, studies have shown that it is able to help with moderate to moderate pain particularly during stressful times. In the July 2021 issue in The American Journal of Sports Medicine four researchers reported on a study that examined twelve stroke patients who were treated with Tui Na in the duration of their hospitalization. Patients had normal symptoms, as well as levels of anxiety, fatigue and depression. Three of the twelve patients who had Spasticity improved, while two others had no improvement or worsened. Both groups had similar symptoms. SCT is a procedure that stimulates nerve compression, and also reduces muscle tone to facilitate recovery. In this procedure needles are inserted in specific points along the spinal column. While both methods may be beneficial, Chinese massage specialists appear to have an advantage when it comes to recovering time and pain relief.

Chiropractors performed the scan with diagnostic imaging software and then made use of hands-on manipulations of the upper and lower limbs as well as the spine. There was a noticeable improvement in all the areas after the four-week period of treatment. The rate of improvement was much greater for chiropractors than for surgeons. The poststroke spasticity decreased by about a month. Spinal decompression was no longer required for the majority of patients. Spinal mobilization did not cause stiffness or soreness.

Although chiropractors had a better rate of success than surgeons, they were also more likely to treat patients successfully. Chiropractic patients who were randomly assigned to chiropractors showed significantly higher rates of complete improvement after the four-week post-stroke Spinal Decompression time. In the initial month of treatment, there was no any difference between the groups at the postoperative appointment. Random assignment was used to determine which group had the greatest improvement. Surprisingly, the chiropractors showed more improvement than surgeons in both the preoperative and postoperative appointments.
