    I have watched five plays recently, which are High Anxiety written by the student actors and directed by Natalie Greene and Christine Young, Autobiography of a Terrorist scripted by Saïd Sayrafiezadeh and directed by Evren Odcikin, The Christians written by Lucas Hnath and directed by Les Waters, The Wedding Singer directed by Alison Collins and choreographed by Blaine Dempsey, as well as Without Mercy, by Patricia Milton. They are different in plots, but have the same perfection in the stage design and performance. All of them have provided me with enjoyable experiences while there are several deficiencies in some aspects of some plays. In fact, all of these five plays refer to specific projects to promote social justice, they are created based on the resources of issues of race and some others, and some of them expand the boundaries if art activity through certain concerns.

These five plays indicate that performance usually acts as a tool of social justice to asks for the public to take measures. The art of performance has an aim to call for the public to make some change so that the society human lives in will become more just and better. It usually relates to certain backgrounds and is performed based on the connects with some social practices (“Focus: Art and Social Justice”). These five plays also play such role that by displaying some social issues historical or at present to pursue a vision for change. High Anxiety presents the anxiety and addiction among college students who bear the press brought by the mental disease. They are afraid of communicating with others and cannot be able to enjoy a relaxed and ease state. Thus, the project to social justice in High Anxiety is the mental state and the relationship with the social members of college students. Autobiography of a Terrorist has another social issue. It records the growth of a terrorist who develops with different and mixed cultures. The character Said is confused with his social and cultural identity and he is considered as a terrorist in others’ eyes due to his cultural background with the potential influential factor of cultural discrimination, whose essence is racial discrimination. This play targets at the unjust attitudes and treatments to some races through showing the negative effects in a comedic manner. Through The Christians, the social justice concerned at the race and the diversity of culture could raise the public attention and might promote some political actions. As to The Christians written it is a play about religion and belief in the dynamic society. It presents the confusion of the leading person who decides to be divorced from the Christians. Therefore, the social justice of this play is about belief and religion. The social justice in another comedic play The Wedding Singer is about romance. It presents the love affairs between different people and discusses the essence of love. The social justice inner can be defined as love with influences from fame, finance and some other factors. Without Mercy tells the story of a family with the absence of a daughter, Mercy. It reflects the distinct attitudes to the maker of the crime to Mercy from the mother and the surviving daughter. It presents the social justice on crime and the right to life.

    Thee plays also reflect that social issues inspire the production of the performance that it provides resources for people to prepare the engaged and effective social activities. The issues of race, gender, sexuality, culture, economics and politics are good themes to create a performance as they not only are popular in the society but also have a significance to call for the related parties or social members to take actions. To speak specifically, the issues of race and culture promote the production of Autobiography of a Terrorist by presenting the unjust treatment to Said, who seems to be an Iranian and a Jewish-American during the Iran hostage crisis, because he has an Iranian-born father and a Jewish American mother. But in fact, he is confused about his real identity and he is bullied and taunted by his classmates when he is young due to his complex identity. Though he studies hard and lives positively and justly, the racial background of him also attracts more attention from others than his personality does. This play acts as a comedy, and it presents a series of unjust treatments to Said. The typical manner to use an issue to create a performance exists in this play also. It acts with the aim of promoting a just society through challenging the injustice phenomenon and valuing the diversity of race and culture. Other plays also adapt this manner to promote a just community. The issue of economics and gender exist in High Anxiety and promotes the just society by facing the discrimination on people with mental diseases and the processing of being strong and mature. These students are in a state where they want to do something but have a limited ability and are in the cold and picky society. They keep high anxiety all the day. High Anxiety aims at promoting a just society via performance of anxious students who have different living backgrounds. The play The Christians contains the issues of region and culture, which could be seen from the name of the play. It tells the story of Pastor Paul who thinks that the church is not the same as it asserts. It asks the questions whether everything word from the God really is true. This play has promoted the Christians’ acceptance to the new things, such as gay marriage. The issue contained in this play has played an effective role in shaping a just society. As to The Wedding Singer, it refers to the issues of sexuality. The singer Robbie is broken up with his girlfriend on their wedding ceremony as she says that what she wants to be is the wife of a rock star but not of a wedding singer. The waitress Julia is about to marrying Glen because of his money and security. It has a happy ending that Robbie proposes to Julia as they know they love each other. This play talks about what true love should be in the floating society. It encourages people to form a marriage based on the true love but not other material conditions. The play Without Mercy is filled with twist which will make people feel drooping. It involves with important issues of legal and ethic regarding life, murder, and death. Mercy is murdered six years ago, which devastates her mother Joanna in spirit. But mercy’s sister Bethany is supporting a plea bargain for Mercy’s killer. The further development of the story finally reveals the fact that the death of Mercy relates to each person in this family, including the sexual harass from Mercy’s stepfather, the ignorance from Joanna, the help from Bethany to help Mercy run out of the family. Bethany believes that each person should be responsible for Mercy’s death and this family is the root cause of the death. Based on the twisting plots, Without Mercy presents the issues of legal, politics, as well as sexuality. All these plays utilize the prevalent and meaningful social issues to promote the realization of a just society. They hold the view that all people share a common humanity, therefore they have a right to ask for fair treatment, which supports for the human rights and an equitable distribution of social resources.

What’s more, some plays of the five ones expand the boundaries of art activity through intellectual, experiential, and community concerns singly. For instance, The Christians expand the boundary of play by using intellectual concern. It refers to a serious issue, which is religion. It changes the public’s knowledge of Christians as people always think that all Christians are conservative but refuse to admit this fact. The same as the fact that democracy became the predominant intellectual concern in America (Feldman 116), free belief is the intellectual concern in The Christians. Besides, The Christians simplifies its traditional elements on the scenery setting. Actually, it has adopted the contrasting light and holy sound effect to express its serious topic. Pastor Paul declares that to believe in hell will no longer be church policy, which contradicts to the knowledge that has long been taught to those good Christians under Paul's ministry. Paul trusts what he reveals is truth solidly, indicating that his promise to explore the true meaning of his religion has not evolved while his beliefs may have. This play expands the art activity to the topic of religion which fits the trend of the society. At the same time, Autobiography of a Terrorist utilizes the experiential concern. Though people with various cultures have the same experiential structure, the way in which the experiences are evaluated may vary appreciably. Thus, the experiential concern to think of a thing vary with different cultures (Shaner 189). This play presents what happens to Said due to his mixed identity that he is a Jewish-American but also an Iranian. He senses the U.S.-Iranian conflict. In the play, Said is considered as a possible candidate of terrorist because of his cultural background relating to the Middle East. But at the same time, Jewish think he is a good friend. The experience of Said expresses that the experiential concerns to the Middle East is different from the American culture and the Jewish culture, which expands the boundary of play that it extends the boundary from simple issues such as love to a serious theme of national cultural conflict. As to the approach of community concern, High Anxiety is the best example of adaptation. A Community Concern means to establish a relationship between certain groups who has particular problems, such as violence, and the outside world, so that their problems will be released or solved under the help from the community (“A Community Concern”). High Anxiety tells the particular group in the college who is in an anxious state all the day. For instance, Alex who has PTSD. This group of students adjusts their status try to get better with the help of the community. The consequence seems to be effective as the light finally become colorful, indicating the bright future of this group.

    To sum up, High Anxiety, Autobiography of a Terrorist, The Christians, The Wedding Singer, and Without Mercy act as the tool of social justice by presenting some social topics to promote the society to take actions and make some changes. For instance, mental anxiety in High Anxiety asks for attention to the group of people who have a mental disease, and the romantic affair in The Wedding Singer encourages people to pursue true love. Besides, they all perform with specific issues as those issues are the resources for the creation of performance. What’s more, three of the five plays expand the boundaries of art actions through different concerns. High Anxiety focuses on the community concern, The Christians emphasizes on the intellectual concern, and Autobiography of a Terrorist takes advantage of the experiential concern.
