Following many hours of consultation and preparation by officers from Raleigh police and animal control, in the end a glue trap captured a venomous zebra cobra on a north Raleigh porch, ending an eventful 48-hour period that attracted attention throughout North Carolina.

A red bucket was used to place the cobra in the bucket and to transport it to a location where all glue could be removed.

An earlier video interview had captured a striped snake crawling onto a porch on Sandringham Drive from the siding of a house. Looking around, its hood was visible as it lifted its head.

The Wildlife Control officers moved camera crews back after confirming that this is the snake, then went in to attempt to capture it.

A 911 call from the same location prompted the search early Tuesday morning.

The North Carolina capital is Raleigh. Following hours of consultation and preparation by Raleigh police and animal control officers, a venomous zebra cobra was caught with a glue trap on a Raleigh porch Wednesday night, bowing out a nearly 48-hour ordeal that gained national attention.

Cobra was placed in red bucket and moved to a safe location to fully remove glue from its body.

A striped snake was captured by WRAL cameras crawling onto a front porch on Sandringham Drive earlier in the day. As it lifted its head, the hood was visible.

Before moving in to capture the snake, Animal Control officers moved camera crews to the back.

The ordeal has ended, said Joan Nelson, her neighbor.

She said she felt safe and really happy. Now that I'm outside, I can go on my deck and have a walk. The snake, however, was in a terrible position.

The snake, a zebra cobra, is extremely fast and can spit up to nine feet away, making a walk with the dog even scarier. The African Snakebite Institute cites the snake as extremely dangerous. A victim's nervous system might shut down upon ingestion of the venom.

Cobra poison causes immediate pain, swelling, irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. Following a heavy fever, breathing problems would result, leading to respiratory failure.

Salina Locke is an experienced veterinarian at Avian and Exotic Animal Care, where she treats all types of pets.

The cobra in this species usually does not bite. They spray their venom more often -- they are very accurate and attack straight in the eye, according to her.

The risk of keeping this snake as a pet prevents Locke from recommending this snake for this purpose.

Bite incidents are most common during sleep. A bit could cause health issues for years, research shows.

In the afternoon of Tuesday, police searched a home near the street where the cobra was last spotted, at 6917 Chamonix Place.

An animal problem led to four police visits in March. Following the sighting on Monday and Tuesday of the zebra cobra on a porch about half a mile away, they returned.

There are county records showing that Keith and Rebecca Gifford live at that address. In a Facebook profile associated with Keith Gifford's name, there are several pictures of snakes he says his son Christopher owns.
