Peritoneal mesothelioma is an uncommon intra-abdominal malignancy. Its aetiology has been believed to be due to either inhalation or intake of asbestos particles. We present a case of peritoneal mesothelioma establishing as an outcome of an unique third route and the inoculation of fibers into the peritoneal cavity by penetrating injury and direct transport.
1. View Details , Malignant mesothelioma cancer of the peritoneum is an unusual malignancy, but one that is increasing in occurrence. Diagnosis is bad and nearly generally deadly. The untreated average survival rate is 6 months and even with the most aggressive multimodal therapy in the type of debulking or cytoreductive surgical treatment and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy five year survival ranges only from 29% to 59% [1, 2]
Usually the inhalation of fibers precedes the peritoneal inoculation and therefore it can be hoped that environmental health treatments on the handling of asbestos will begin to have an impact on the incidence of peritoneal mesothelioma cancer in the majority of cases [3] This case would regrettably not be effected by such procedures due to the novel aetiology of inoculation of the fibers as described.
