Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) is the process of transmitting TV content using Internet Protocol (IP). This is distinct from traditional TV delivery via terrestrial or satellite. In contrast to downloaded media IPTV offers the ability to stream the source media continuously. A player for media on the client is capable of streaming the source content, such as TV channelsalmost immediately. It is referred to as streaming media.

Although iptv uses the Internet protocol it is not limited to TV streams from internet television. Internet (Internet television). IPTV can be found within a variety of subscriber-based telecoms networks which offer high-speed channels for end users via set top boxes and other equipment. IPTV could also be utilized to provide media to corporate or private networks. It is a process of standardization that continues to be conducted for IPTV within the telecoms industry (e.g. European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is the highlight.

IPTV service can be classified as live television or live media. They can be classified with or without the interactivity associated with it; moving media's time, e.g., catch-up TV (replays a TV show that was broadcast hours or days ago) or start-over TV (replays the current program from the beginning) along with video on demand (VOD) that allows browsing and/or viewing content from the media catalog.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The International Telecommunication Union's focus committee IPTV on IPTV accepted this official definition:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

Another definition of IPTV, relating to the telecom industry is that of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV can be defined as the secure and reliable service that delivers to customers entertainment video and related services. It could be Live TV, Video On Demand and Interactive TV (iTV). These services are delivered across an access agnostic, wireless network using the IP protocol to transport the audio, video as well as control signals. IPTV deployments are safer than video on the Internet. They also deliver high efficiency and security.
