Centers run weekly and are attended routinely by other consultant dermatologists, pharmacists, occupational health medical professionals and nurses and industry experts. We routinely contribute to research study in this subspecialty area, including collective work at a nationwide level with the British Society for Cutaneous Allergic Reaction (BSCA). The Birmingham Skin Centre performs treatments in two dedicated operating facilities, and in addition in other surgical facilities across the Trust consisting of access to the main theatre for patients needing a general anaesthetic.
These consist of easy procedures like biopsies (screening a tiny sample of skin for cancer) to significant skin grafts performed by dermatologists and plastic cosmetic surgeons. Currently our complex skin cases are handled by our in-house plastic surgery coworker connected to our dermatology unit. There is a devoted day treatment system (DTU) for education and treatment of clients with topical treatments consisting of 'specials' such as coal tar and dithranol.
