<h3>Sound Advice For Plumbing Maintenance And Repair</h3>

Did you know that the squeaking you hear from your pipes is the hot water causing the pipe to expand? This and more great plumbing information is provided in this article. If you are looking for clear and concise information, then read the tips we have provided below.

Act quickly if your pipes freeze! Shut off the water and open the faucet, enabling it to drain when it thaws. Starting with the faucet, and working your way to the iced-up area, aim a propane torch or hairdryer at the pipe - this will quickly defrost it. You could also wrap the pipe in a heating pad or aim a heat lamp at it, but this will take quite some time. A last resort is to wrap the pipe in rags and pour boiling water over it.

If your pipes are prone to freezing, let the water trickle continuously in at least one faucet during weather that is below freezing. This will minimize the chances that the pipes will freeze and leave you without water. If water is continually running through the pipes and trickling out of a faucet, the pipes are less likely to freeze.

Group all of your plumbing repairs before scheduling a plumber to come out. Check all of your fixtures and faucets. If anything is dripping, running or clogged, make a list for the plumber. That way, when the plumber comes, they can do all of the jobs in one visit. This will cut down on charges.

You can check for damage to the floors around the toilets by checking for soft areas. Sit on the toilet and move from side to side, placing one foot on the ground. As you do, see if the floor lacks sturdiness or feels otherwise soft. As with many problems, early detection can save you a lot of money.

To prevent pipe banging when you turn on the water, think about rubber blankets or straps. Instead of assuming the pipes need replaced, consider anchoring them or buffering them. If your pipes are plastic, leave them some room for expansion and contraction. If pipes do not leak but just make noise, eliminate the noise.

Unclog drains with ease. Try using a plunger and drain cleaner, as your clog may simply be a build-up of hair and debris. If this doesn't work you may have to clear the drain with a snake. Feed the snake into the drain line as far as it will go. Turn the crank gently, which will help to loosen the clog. Remove the snake, and run water down the drain to see if the clog has been removed. Check it Out may have to use the snake a couple of times, before the clog is cleared so don't give up!

Use strainers in all drains to catch hair and other objects. This will prevent all the material from going down the drain and causing a clog, which can cause a bigger problem down the line. Clean out the strainers daily so that you don't start getting backup of water in your sink or tub.

Check your faucets outdoors for drips before the first winter freeze. If you find a problem, you need to move quickly to repair it, lest the faucet crack. Whatever the material of your pipes, freezing water causes pressure that can make them crack. Even the most minute crack can cause a big enough leak to create flooding or water damage and mold in your home.

Make sure that the temperature of your home's water heater is not above 120F. On older water heaters, be sure it is not above medium settings. When temperatures get higher than 120, scalding can occur. Also, having the settings above 120F, tends to use more energy than lower temperatures do.

If the hot water heater in your house is over ten years old, you should look at replacing it. Hot water heaters are very susceptible to corrosion on the bottom. This can lead to leaking and flooding whatever room it is in. Then not only will you have to replace it, but you'll have to fix any damage caused by the leak.

Always check for leaks in and around your toilets. Put food coloring into your toilet water in the tank to test for leaks. Look at its bowl, then if you spot any colored water within just a few seconds, there's an issue that must be dealt with soon.

If you're the type of individual who likes to conserve water, then you can opt for a tankless model of water heater instead of a traditional one. Unlike traditional water heaters, these do not retain any water within them. Instead, they heat up water as it is needed. By not wasting resources heating water that no one is using, it is possible to save money.

Use a foaming root killer, twice yearly, to remove tree roots that can bring your drains to a standstill. Foaming products fill the entire pipe with chemicals, killing roots that grow from the top of the pipe as well as the part that water flows through. They are more effective than regular root killers for this reason.

When it comes to plumbing an ounce of prevention is the best thing to prevent things from going haywire. In order to prevent clogging avoid doing things that would clog drains. Do not pour oil down the kitchen sink, and install hair catching filters in all your bath tubs. This will prevent a lot of unnecessary clogs.

Do not put stringy or fibrous items into your garbage disposal. Substances like banana peels, gristle, or celery may not completely break down in the disposal, and may clog your pipes instead of flowing out of the waste lines as they are supposed to. When in doubt, do not try to dispose of something that may not break down completely.

When replacing any PVC type pipes in your home, make sure you buy the correct PVC for the job. PVC comes in several different sizes and grades as well as for different temperature applications. If the water going through the pipes is headed for the kitchen or bathroom, or is for laundry or gardening usage, it must be labeled as "Potable."

If you need to get a new toilet, be sure you go with a trustworthy brand. Cheap toilets are more likely to break down easily and you will end up having to buy a new one. If you are unsure of which brands are good, ask the salesperson in a home improvement store.

Remove all foreign objects from your drain, before you clean the area with chemicals. These objects include all kitchen utensils, fruit pits and certain types of metal objects. These cannot be flushed down your drain and could damage your unit significantly, if you put them through the garbage disposal.

Plumbing is actually a serious thing, and when you know what the issues are and how to deal with them, you are that much closer to fixing them. Use the tips that you have read, and you can fix the problem by yourself or with the help of a professional, easily and successfully.

<p>Rod Lefebvre has been a plumber for 34 years and said one common mistake people make is not having their homes checked on if they go away.</p>

<p>"Just make sure that if you are away from your house that you have the right people that are actually going inside looking at things making sure everything is fine and stuff," said Lefebvre.</p>

<p>Lefebvre said some homes are more at risk if pipes are on outside walls but says issues with pipes freezing can happen to any home when temperatures plunge.</p>

<p>"If you can just get the heat in there as quick as possible to get things thawed out then you are saving yourself damages down the line," said Lefebvre.</p>

<p>Castle Plumbing and Heating said space heaters can  help prevent frozen pipes but they have to be used properly and safely. There is also another preventative step.</p>

<p>"When you know it’s going to be really, really cold outside it never hurts especially if you know you have a trouble area in your home it never hurts to leave your facet a trickle because if there is some movement in that pipe then it can’t freeze," said Jean.</p>

<p>In a recent tweet, the Greater Sudbury Fire Service said never use open flames to thaw frozen plumbing. For a safe solution, consider a certified plumber.</p><p><strong></strong> </p></blockquote>
