Minecraft Java Edition Will Soon Require A Microsoft Account

Minecraft Java Edition has always been operating pretty much as it was prior to Mojang's acquisition of the developer by Microsoft. Bedrock Edition was created to integrate with Microsoft's account system however, Java has been operating on its own Mojang account island up to the present. Just another site will soon require players to have an Microsoft account to play. However, you'll still get an unrestricted cape.

You'll have to transfer your Java or Mojang account to the Microsoft account system by the beginning of 2021. Mojang states that this is to introduce two-factor authentication in order to provide greater security, but it will also result in improved parental control including chat and invitation block and account integration with Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.

Regarding Minecraft mods and PvP Mojang states that nothing is changing. Java and Bedrock will remain separate games. While you'll be able to use your Java username, you might have to change your username if you sign up with a Microsoft account. You can combine your Minecraft sign-ins if already have a Microsoft account.

Mojang has announced the cape, which was previously the most exclusive Java Edition item: to make the transition easier. You'll receive a free cape for participating in the transition, and while it won't feature the exclusive patterns of the Minecon mantles but it will give everyone an opportunity to feel royal for a moment.

Although there is no reason to expect anything to change, players still have concerns. Among them, the more restrictive terms of service by Microsoft might lead to bans that could lead to some players being shut out of Minecraft.
