Sony chiefs are under pressure from Fortnite players to address complaints regarding "crossplay" limitations.

Gamers were able to use the same Fortnite account if they have previously played the title on a PlayStation.

This prevents them from being able to make use of clothes and other purchases in-game and rewards that they've earned.

There is no limitation in the transfer of data between the Xbox One and Switch.

Gamers aren't able to share Fortnite accounts between Microsoft and Sony's platforms.

The Switch's portable nature is a draw for many who have purchased it as a second gaming device.

Sony has yet to confirm that it is responsible for the restriction. However, it made the following statement to BBC.

"We're always open to hearing what the PlayStation community would like to know about to improve their gaming experience," it said.

"With... more that 80 million monthly active PlayStation Network users, we've created a huge gaming community that can play on Fortnite.

"We also provide Fortnite cross-play with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite players on PS4 to play alongside more gamers on other platforms."

A spokeswoman said "We have nothing to add beyond this point."

Both Microsoft and Fortnite publisher Epic Games have previously indicated that Epic Games Japanese company has decided to block PlayStation gamers from competing with other console owners in the title's multiplayer battle-to-the-death Battle Royale mode.

Global hit

Sony has come under fire for preventing cross-play in its other games in the past including Minecraft and Rocket League.

Fortnite's huge success suggests that the backlash could be more devastating.

Epic said this week that the title has accumulated more than 125 million players around the world.

And Nintendo has announced that its free-to-play version of the game was downloaded more than two million times in the 24 hours after its release on the Nintendo Switch on Tuesday.

The complaints about the issue are already risking to shadow Sony's PR efforts at the E3 video games show in Los Angeles.

Each time it posts news about its latest releases to Twitter and Facebook the public has responded by demanding that it allow them to share their Fortnite logins and allow cross-play.

@PlayStation has taken my Fortnite account hostage by refusing to let me play with other players. Pretty sad that I can't connect to a third party account on the Switch because it's tied to PS4. It's a pity @Sony #BlameSony pic.twitter.com/OfRG55meXr

What could @Sony PS's motto be "For the players" if they stop cross compatibility with everyone... you ain't for the players in any way. #PlayStationE3 #fortniteswitch

The responses are all from people who have asked Sony about unlocking Fortnite accounts.

@Sony seems to be blocking the cross-play of #Fortnite between PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch So I'm switching to Xbox One for my non-Switch platform. This will allow me to play with my children and also play together. I recommend anyone who can do the same.

The PlayStation 4 is the strongest selling console of the current generation by a significant margin, but one industry watcher said that this didn't make it unaffected by attacks.

Samantha Loveridge, associate editor at GamesRadar+, told the BBC that Sony must be aware of when it comes to handling the situation.

"Fortnite is massive, and it's only going to get bigger - it's about to come to Android which means Sony has got to start thinking about its closed-garden ecosystem.

"Gamers deserve an explanation for why this compatibility problem exists in one way or the other."

Sony does allow compatibility with PC and iOS versions of the game, suggesting that the Xbox/Switch block it is a tactical option rather than an technical obstacle.

While the PlayStation firm is yet to make a statement, gamers are putting on pressure from their rivals.

When asked about the situation Nintendo's North America chief Reggie Fils-Aime explained to the IGN news site: "What competitors do is their decision. We believe that being developer-forward as well as fan-forward is best for the game's interests.

One of Microsoft's gaming chiefs as well as one of its corporate accounts, have tweeted about this issue.

It's great to see cross-play and progression between Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Many have an Switch. I hope to see you in the next !! https://t.co/mMRXj2GA10

@NintendoUK, would you like to play Fortnite later?
