Java Edition's crafting table interface.

Crafting is the process of making tools, items, and blocks in Minecraft. Players can craft by moving items from their inventory to a grid of crafting and arranging them according to the instructions of a recipe. A crafting table is able to access three grids, including two-by-two crafting grid. You can also craft items made within the 2x2 grid at the crafting table.

3x3 Crafting grid (crafting table)

Creative, Survival, Adventure, and Spectator (Java Edition only) players have always access to the 2x2 crafting grid on their inventory screen. Small crafting recipes that are at least 2x2 can be made there. This includes wooden planks, crafting tables, sticks torches, and even some recipe that are not shaped. You can craft items by using the 3x3 grid. To accomplish this, you need to create a crafting board made of four planks of wood and place it in the world. Then you can press the use button while facing it. The interface will appear with a 3x3 grid that the player can use to craft any crafting recipe in the game. There is also a recipe book that you can find all crafting recipes.

Certain recipes don't require their ingredients to be laid out in a certain arrangement on the grid. They are sometimes referred to as shapeless recipes. Players can make the appearance of a fermented spider-eye, by placing its ingredients anywhere on the grid. [note 1]

However most recipes require their ingredients be placed in the proper places on the crafting grid. These are often referred to as shaped recipes. Ingredients in recipes with a shape can be moved up or down, left, or right. They can also flip in the opposite direction. For instance, a 3x1 recipe, such as bread, can be created using the top, middle or bottom row of the 3x3 grid. However, it is not possible to make using the 2x2 grid since it must be three items wide. Likewise, a bow may be made using strings that are placed on the left instead of on the right.

Some recipes cannot be moved or mirrored in this manner. These are known as fixed recipes. For example, dyes in banner recipes must be specifically placed to achieve the desired pattern. (Bedrock Edition only) Data packs and mods can be added to fixed recipes.

Unlike other in-game actions like brewing, smelting, and enchanting, crafting is completely silent.

recipes that are not shaped are marked with an intertwined pair of arrows on the graphic of the crafting table. This symbol does not appear in the game. Recipe Book[]

The recipe book is a feature in Minecraft that serves as a recipe book and as a crafting guide. It shows every crafting recipe that the player has had materials for.

There are many ways to arrange crafting recipes, such as the following:

The first tab contains every unlocked recipe. The second tab contains weapons, tools, and armor. The third tab includes building materials. The fourth tab is filled with food items and other miscellaneous items. The fifth tab is made up of redstone items. Recipe system[System for Recipes[

Recipes, including crafting recipes, can be configured by data packs in Java Edition or add-ons in Bedrock Edition. As of 1.16 there were 379 crafting recipes.

Certain recipes can be animated to conserve space (requires JavaScript). This wiki labels recipes without shapes with a pair of intertwined, interconnected arrows on its crafting table graphic. Recipes that are fixed for crafting are marked with an exclamation point. These symbols are not present in the game.
