Be sure to check out the music videos! The metaverse is coming for you.

Have you ever attended an event in the metaverse? It's a good idea, judging by the new category that has been added to the MTV Video Music Awards. This year's VMAs will hand out a Moon Person for "Best Metaverse Performance," but there's no information about whether the award will be received online or in person.

The nominees are Ariana Grande and BLACKPINK, BTS Charli XCX Justin Bieber and Twenty One Pilots. Your top performers have been performing in the metaverse.

Each artist added their own unique twist to their metaverse performance. Skinnight Ariana Grande performed a space-themed performance in Fortnite as well as BLACKPINK brought their "pretty wild" style to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Mobile. BTS have been singing their chart-toppers in English "Butter" and "Permission to Dance" on the stage of Minecraft where the boys' oversized avatars tried to recreate their iconic dance moves. Charli XCX, Twenty One Pilots and others opted for Roblox concerts. (It is important to note that Charli XCX's performance was the result of her partnership with Samsung.) Justin Bieber also put on the show at Wave the virtual entertainment platform.

They're not the only artists performing in the metaverse. Virtual and metaverse concerts became popular in the aftermath of the pandemic. Live, in-person entertainment was put on hold. However, online and virtual performances are here to stay, especially as the metaverse becomes more integrated in our everyday lives.

The recognition at the VMAs suggests that metaverse performances could even be a staple of the music industry. Only time will tell.
